    (Job #548460) Radiologic Technician II 10/12 Months, Radiologic Technician, Salary Range: $3,743 - $7,224 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 10/12 pay plan (work 10 months of the year with pay and benefits over 12 months) permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Student Health & Wellbeing Services Department.     Position Summary:

    Under the leadership of the Medical Director, with administrative oversight of the SHWS Executive Director, the radiologic technologist performs diagnostic x-ray studies, as well as technical tasks associated with a one-person x-ray department. When not performing radiology duties, the position will provide clinical assistance in our acute care or scheduled care clinic spaces.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Perform Diagnostic X-Rays - 30%
    • Receive patients, give appropriate instructions to prepare for the exam. Determine the most suitable positioning for the x-ray and shield patients appropriately. Select techniques to ensure optimum quality, consider physician preference in determining appropriate studies.
    • Process images for a variety of examinations including, but not limited to, chest series, lumbar spine, ribs, and extremities.

    X-Ray Review, Provider Interaction; Following Protocols - 30%
    • Review and critique images and notify the ordering physician of possible abnormalities. Determine whether studies should be repeated or extended, and be alert to patient crisis requiring immediate notification of a physician.
    • Serve as a resource to clinical personnel.
    • Follow protocols for radiation, mechanical and electrical safety.
    • Follow policies and protocols for appropriate documentation and release of information to patients and third parties.

    Technical Tasks - 10%
    • Perform a variety of technical tasks involved in operating x-ray equipment in accordance with prescribing radiation safety procedures; calibrating equipment (e.g., making adjustments for proper exposure, voltage, and current); perform quality control.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment problems, perform basic preventive maintenance as needed. Arrange for and coordinate major maintenance and repair of x-ray machine with manufacturer’s technical representatives.
    • Consult and communicate as needed with outside radiologists, and the campus Radiation Safety Officer.

    Clinic Support and Assistance - 25%
    • Clinical assistant duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
      • Provide chaperoning of medical appointments
      • Patient scheduling and reception
      • Coordinate patient flow, including escorting patients to clinical areas and instructing them on how to prepare for exams or treatments
      • Preparing exam and treatment rooms
      • Obtaining patient data
      • Taking routine measurements (e.g., height, weight, temperature, vital signs)
      • Assist practitioners in the delivery of health care services
      • Maintain equipment and supplies (may order and stock supplies as necessary)
      • Maintain accurate records and files
      • Sterilization of / cleaning equipment
      • May perform basic tests as peak flow, vision screening, hearing testing
      • Work with practitioners to ensure patient rights to privacy, safety and confidentiality are maintained

    Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
    • Thorough knowledge of radiographic equipment and techniques, including digital equipment and related technologies.
    • Thorough knowledge of regional and gross anatomy and physiology of the human body.
    • Thorough knowledge of standardized radiological clinical procedures; principles of radiation protection and hazards of radiologic materials and the safety precautions required.
    • Thorough knowledge of industry standards and ethics pertaining to radiologic technology.
    • Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to radiology.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and the biological sciences.
    • General knowledge of the principles of physics, electricity and related physical sciences as applied to X-ray and other commonly used radiologic techniques, medical unit or clinical procedures.
    • Thorough knowledge of the hazards of radiologic materials and safety precautions.
    • Working knowledge of health center administrative processes and procedures.
    • Ability to perform general diagnostic radiographic procedures and
    • effectively assess the quality of images taken.
    • Ability to operate allocable diagnostic equipment including X-ray and digital imaging equipment.
    • Ability to produce quality radiographs and images using applicable systems to manipulate and enhance images.
    • Ability to perform simple maintenance on applicable equipment.
    • Ability to effectively use computerized systems associated with producing and manipulating digital images.
    • Ability to maintain records and use applicable computerized systems.
    • Ability to recognize patient emergencies and alert practitioners.
    • Ability to establish and maintain appropriate safety precautions to prepare solutions used in processing X-ray film and process film.
    • Ability to file film correctly.
    • Ability to compile reports.
    • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and follow oral and written directions.
    • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
    • Ability to be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
    • Ability to perform unusual or specialized diagnostic radiographic procedures of all body structures with high quality results.
    • Ability to establish and maintain appropriate safety standards.
    • Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and implement departmental procedures and activities.
    • Ability to provide lead work direction; represent the department at administrative meetings.
    • Ability to and recommend new or revised departmental procedures in order to increase the effectiveness of the operation.
    • General knowledge of daily clinic operations and organization ranging from patient scheduling and reception to delivery of health care services and processing of paperwork, aseptic techniques and requirements.
    • General knowledge of the uses, application and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above, such as in preparing exam rooms.
    • General knowledge of obtaining patient data, and assisting practitioners.
    • Ability to learn clinical assistance methods and techniques.
    • Ability to understand and use basic medical assistance terminology to accurately and efficiently support practitioners and follow their instructions.
    • Ability to perform clinical assistance activities accurately and timely.
    • Ability to handle instruments and equipment properly.
    • Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate to the position to support maintaining accurate records and reading medical terminology.
    • Ability to use health center automated systems to enter and maintain data and prepare simple reports.
    • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
    • Ability to be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy; general knowledge of physical sciences as applied to x-ray; thorough knowledge of the hazards of radiological procedures and safety precautions.
    • Ability to perform x-rays with high quality results.
    • Ability to evaluate quality of x-rays and retake if necessary.
    • Operate applicable diagnostic equipment, including radiation producing machine and digital imaging processing equipment.
    • Ability to use good judgment and communicate effectively and positively with patients, health providers, campus personnel, and radiologists.
    • Effectively use computerized systems and maintain records.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
    • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with a diverse group of staff, students and faculty.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    High school diploma or equivalent. Candidates must possess and maintain a certificate of Radiologic Technology issued by the Radiologic Health Branch of the California Department of Health Services. Two or more years of radiologic experience with progressive responsibility as a certified radiologic technologist which demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform assigned duties; or equivalent combination of education and experience. which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    At least two years of increasingly responsible experience as a Certified Radiologic Technologist which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities as listed. Experience with an electronic medical records system. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience performing Medical Assistant responsibilities or be willing to be trained to perform Medical Assistant duties. Co-Certification as a Phlebotomist is a plus.
