Department of Public Health (DPH) is recruiting for a
Supervising Animal Control Officer who will be assigned to the
High Desert region responsible for supervising Animal Control Program staff engaged in licensing, animal regulation enforcement, animal care and complaint investigation activities, and other shelter and/or field related services.
The list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current assignments in the High Desert region (Hesperia, Apple Valley, Victorville). Recruitment and Retention Bonus: Bonus payment up to $2,000 in total compensation may be available for newly hired employees from this recruitment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Work Schedule: Must be available for standby/call-back duty and weekend shifts. Applicants must indicate availability on the application to be considered.
Penal Code (PC) 832 Course Training: Supervising Animal Control Officer incumbents are required to complete a PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Course within one (1) year of date of hire. PC 832 course must have been completed with adherence to the Requalification Requirement (Three Year Rule), and must be maintained throughout the duration of employment. Some criminal convictions may preclude applicants from completing the PC 832 course training. Uniforms: Employees must purchase their own uniforms; those in regular positions will receive an annual uniform allowance.
Physical: Applicants must be able to lift up to 100 pounds in order to lift and restrain small to very large animals, both domestic and wild. Applicant must be able to perform in inclement weather.
Travel/License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

Minimum RequirementsAssignment Location: The list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancies in the High Desert region. Applicants who do not indicate a willingness to work in the High Desert region will be disqualified. Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience performing duties as a journey-level Animal Control Officer.
NOTE: Trainee-level experience is
not considered qualifying and must be clearly separated on the application from time spent at the journey-level position.
Desired QualificationsLead worker or supervisory experience is highly desirable.
