    Definition

    Come join the Newport Beach Police Department as an Animal Control Officer!

    Currently there is one full-time position available. This recruitment will remain open on a continuous basis with the first review of applications on September 4 , 2025, or at 200 applications - whichever occurs first. Applicants that apply after the first review are not guaranteed to be considered for this recruitment. Candidates are encouraged to apply immediately as this recruitment may close at any time.

    Selection Components:
    • Application Evaluation: The most qualified applicants will be invited to an interview.
    • Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 30, 2025. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list and may be invited to begin the background process.

    This position works 10-hour shifts.

    Experience & Education and License/Certificate

    A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience: One year experience working with animals is desirable.

    Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

    License/Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

    Possession of, or ability to obtain, P.O.S.T PC 832 certification within one year of appointment.

    Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Newport Beach employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.

    The City of Newport Beach is located in the coastal center of Orange County, with Los Angeles County to the north and San Diego County to the south. It has an estimated permanent population of 86,738 but during the summer months, the population grows to more than 100,000 with 20,000 to 100,000 tourists daily.

    The City of Newport Beach was incorporated September 1, 1906 and the current City Charter was adopted in 1954. The City operates under a Council-Manager form of government. Its seven City Council Members are elected by district, but are voted on by the population as a whole. They serve four-year terms. The Council consists of the Mayor and six other members and is responsible for policy-making, passing local ordinances, adopting the budget, appointing committees and hiring the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Council, for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, and for appointing heads of departments.
