    Job Summary:

    Under the supervision of a physician, clinic coordinator, or RN III, and general oversight of the Executive Director, the Registered Nurse I provides standard nursing care, including monitoring and reporting patient conditions, supporting health education, and overseeing clinic support staff within their scope. Duties may also include assisting with policy development, serving on committees, and occasionally working at the Palm Desert Campus.

    Duties and responsibilities:
    • Provide telephone and walk-in triage using established protocols to assess patient symptoms and determine care.
    • Escalate scheduling issues, follow standing orders, and administer first aid for minor injuries to students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
    • Communicate normal lab results with provider approval; schedule follow-up appointments for abnormal results.
    • Conduct hemoglobin testing and patient assessments under standing orders, including pregnancy counseling and referrals.
    • Support Student Health Center initiatives addressing student needs such as homelessness, lack of insurance, and food insecurity.
    • Contact patients regarding referrals, prescriptions, and follow-up appointments.
    • Prepare patients and assist providers during exams, procedures, and telehealth visits.
    • Perform routine and CLIA-waived lab tests; prepare and process lab samples.
    • Administer immunizations, medications, TB/skin tests, and EKGs per protocol.
    • Provide patient education on topics such as STIs, contraception, and hypertension.
    • Monitor lab results, update records, and coordinate with front office on registration holds.
    • Complete prior authorizations for psychiatric medications and communicate status to patients/pharmacies.
    • Support clinic operations, including schedule adjustments and requisitions for labs/X-rays.
    • Contribute to Quality Improvement Studies, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Prevention and Accreditation efforts.
    • Participates in the clinic and staff trainings, conferences and other presentations when appropriate.
    • Participates in continuing education activities to keep current on pertinent topics as well as to complete ongoing licensure requirements.
    • Participates in Student Health Center activities such as health fairs, immunization clinics and student orientations when assigned.
    • Monitors follow up pap smears to ensure patients are returning for their yearly appointments.
    • Monitors chlamydia and gonorrhea follow ups to ensure patients are returning for follow up appointments.
    • Completes all department and university required trainings as assigned.
    • Performs other related duties supporting the SHC operations.
    • Participates in division and University committees and initiatives as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
    • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED

    Required Qualifications
    • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics. Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff.
    • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties; accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis; respond with therapy to treatment reactions; use applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports; gain the cooperation of patients; analyze emergency situations and take prompt action; maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Two or more years post-graduate RN experience in student healthcare
    • Thorough knowledge of general methods, procedures, and practices of an outpatient medical facility
    • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff
    • Thorough knowledge of medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics
    • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles
    • Working knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling
    • Working knowledge of software applications used in the Health Center
    • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties
    • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
    • Ability to effectively apply specialized nursing skills
    • Ability to accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis
    • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan work and projects
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies

    License/Certifications:
      • Must possess and maintain a valid license with California Board of Registered Nursing.
      • Must possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
      • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,878 - $5,122 per month

    Classification Salary Range: $4,497 - $8,679 per month

    The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

    The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.     Position Information:

    Work status: Full-time/Exempt/ Probationary

    Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Working schedule: TBA, however will not exceed more than 30 hours a week.

    This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The scope of responsibilities for this position includes making or participating in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the individual holding this position is required to file an initial Conflict of Interest: Statement of Economic Interests ("Form 700") within thirty (30 days) from the date of hire and on an annual basis. In addition, the individual holding this position must complete the required conflict of interest training within thirty (30) days of their appointment and at least once during each consecutive period of two calendar years following the appointment, subject to the Fair Political Practices Commission regulations.

    Background Check

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Drivers License Check

    Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

    Mandated Reporter

    The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

    Campus Security Authority

    This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
