The Team... The Human Resources (HR) Division is supported by a staff of 27. This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20-25 hours per week, for a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The Role... The Human Resources (HR) Division is seeking an Administrative Intern, to join our team. The Administrative Intern will play a vital role in driving the success of the Division contributing to the recruitment and selection process for assigned client groups and outreach events. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, professional environment. The Administrative Intern will learn how the different branches of HR (Talent Acquistion, Training & Development, Employee Relations, Payroll & Benefits, Environmental Health & Safety) set the stage for a remarkable employee experience, including how job recruitments are initiated and executed from job advertisement to employment onboarding. Key duties will include screening applications for qualifications in response to job opportunities, drafting creative job bulletins, flyers, and brochures, attending community outreach and college events, delivering presentations, assisting with pre-employment and onboarding processes. This role is perfect for a motivated self-starter eager to contribute meaningfully while developing valuable skills in communications operations and development.
How you get to contribute: - Assist with developing job bulletins and flyers.
- Screen candidate applications in response to job opportunities.
- Assist with setting up in-person interviews.
- Create job offer letters.
- Assist with special events, outreach activities, and meetings.
- Prepare presentations and speeches.
- Attend and participate in Division and project-related meetings; handle action items as assigned.
- Attend community outreach and college/job fair events.
- Assist with employee engagement, learning & development initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE Mininum Qualifications: - Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program at a college or university with status as a junior or senior. Recent graduates (within the last 12 months at the time of application) are encouraged to apply.
- A major in Human Resource Management, Public Administration, Public Relations, Business Administration, International Business or closely related field is preferred.
To REALLY catch our attention: You must be able to demonstrate the following professional attributes and strengths:
- Detail-oriented is a must.
- Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
- Strong public speaking and community outreach skills.
- A solid working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is highly desirable.
- Customer service experience is desirable.
- Knowledge of Port industry is a plus.
SPECIAL NOTE This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.
The non-career Intern position typically works 20-25 hours per week throughout the year, up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
