    The ideal candidate enjoys helping visitors, providing excellent customer service, and offering information about local attractions. Reliable and flexible, they assist with gift shop sales, Mobile Welcome Center events, and daily operations.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Required:
    • Valid Texas Driver's License
    • H.S. Diploma or GED equivalent
    • 1 year of customer service experience, preferably in a tourism, hospitality, or retail environment
    Preferred:
    • Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA)
    • Retail experience in a visitor center or tourism-related setting

    Position Overview
    Under basic supervision, the Part-Time Destination Engagement Associate performs customer service and operational functions at the Waco Welcome Center, assisting tourists, visitors, and Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) clients on a part-time basis (up to 20 hours per week). Provides information about Waco's attractions, sells merchandise from the gift shop, and supports Mobile Welcome Center activations to enhance visitor experiences. Works under the direction of the Destination Engagement Supervisor, contributing to the DMO's mission of promoting Waco as a premier tourism destination. Embodies the City of Waco's commitment to service, inclusivity, and excellence.

    Essential Functions
    • Provides exceptional customer service to Welcome Center visitors and DMO clients, offering accurate information about Waco’s attractions, events, and hospitality offerings to enhance visitor experiences.
    • Sells merchandise from the Welcome Center gift shop, promoting locally-made or Texas-made products and ensuring a positive retail experience.
    • Processes cash and credit transactions, operates the cash register, and prepares daily deposits in accordance with City of Waco cash handling procedures, maintaining accurate financial records.
    • Assists with Mobile Welcome Center operations during off-site events and activations, providing information, selling merchandise, and engaging with visitors and residents.
    • Fulfills online retail order requests, ensuring timely and accurate responses to customer inquiries.
    • Promotes Waco’s tourism assets by sharing destination highlights and brochures with visitors, aligning with DMO promotional efforts.
    • Supports Welcome Center operations, including restocking merchandise, maintaining clean and welcoming displays, and assisting with basic setup for in-house events or activities.
    • Participates in basic destination knowledge training provided by the DMO to stay informed about Waco’s tourism offerings and deliver accurate information to visitors.
    • Collaborates with Welcome Center staff to ensure seamless operations and visitor satisfaction during assigned shifts.
    • Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues, client information, and City of Waco data, adhering to all policies and standards.
    • Adapts to a flexible schedule, including regular weekend shifts and occasional evenings, to support Welcome Center and Mobile Welcome Center operations.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned to support the DMO’s mission and the City of Waco

    Governance and Organization

    Waco is a home rule city with a council-manager form of government. The City Council sets the tax rate, approves the budget, appoints members to City boards and commissions, enacts City ordinances, and appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, City Secretary, and the Municipal Court Judge.

    The City has a strong Financial Management Policy that guides the operation and delivery of quality City services, contributes to excellent AA+ and Aa1 bond ratings, and maintains an unassigned fund balance reserve in the General Fund equal to 28% of current year budgeted expenditures. The City of Waco has more than 1,600 employees and a total operating budget of over $400 million.

    The City provides a full range of municipal services including a regional airport, animal services, building inspections, code enforcement, convention and visitors bureau, emergency management, housing and community development, economic development, fire, public health, library, municipal court, parks and recreation, planning, police, public works, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Museum, utilities and zoo operations.
