    JOB SUMMARY

    Provides routine nutrition counseling, WIC benefits, and breastfeeding education and support. Prepares and processes program documentation and determines client eligibility. Conducts clinical testing, measuring, and analysis. Assists with general clinic operations and community outreach activities.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Provides nutritional counseling and nutrition services to program participants:
    • Reviews and determines the eligibility of participants.
    • Counsels individuals and families regarding nutrition.
    • Performs accurate and complete documentation according to policies and procedures.
    • Assigns the proper food package for issuance of benefits.
    • Addresses nutritional concerns and goals of parents/guardians.
    • Serves as a liaison between participants and other health and social service providers.
    • Teaches nutrition education classes; supports and educates women in breastfeeding techniques and the use of breast pump equipment.

    2. Performs clinical testing and analysis:
    • Obtains blood samples and anthropometrics.
    • Determines nutritional risk factors of participants.
    • Obtains approval for prescription formulas and orders for participants.

    3. Plans, coordinates, and conducts community outreach activities:
    • Coordinates with community leaders and other service providers to increase awareness of WIC Program services.

    4. Maintains a Welcoming and Sanitary Environment:
    • Participates in cleaning restrooms, kitchen/break area, furniture, doors, windows, floors, and equipment.
    • Removes trash to the proper disposal receptacle.
    • Re-stocks supplies such as tissue, towels, soap, and hand sanitizer.
    • Reports facility issues to supervisor.

    5. Miscellaneous:
    • Coordinates the ordering of breastfeeding and/or other clinic supplies; monitors and maintains supply inventories.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.


    DECISION MAKING
    • This position works under general supervision.
    • Must have the ability to evaluate and determine participant eligibility for program services


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • High School Diploma or equivalent with 18+ months of previous WIC experience and completion of the Certified WCS Program within 5 months of hire is required, or; Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutritional Science, or related field, or; Home Economics degree with 12+ hours of nutrition courses; DTR; RN; LVN; or other degreed professional (with state approval) with 12+ hours of nutrition courses.
    • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.


    CORE COMPETENCIES AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    JOB DIMENSIONS
    • Must be able to read and comprehend program policies and documentation.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required; must be able to maintain positive working relationships with program personnel, healthcare providers, vendors, program participants, and the general public.
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
    • Immunizations: For the health and safety of staff and clients, proof of immunizations is recommended. Immunizations may be provided at the City’s expense if the individual chooses to receive them. Recommended immunizations include MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella (Chickenpox), Influenza (annually), Tetanus (booster every 10 years), Hepatitis B (series of 3), and Tuberculosis (TB) testing. TB documentation within the past year is preferred at the time of hire. Annual TB testing may be waived with completion of a Tuberculosis Annual Questionnaire and absence of symptoms.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
    Physical requirements include lifting up to 45 pounds with assistance, rarely. Subject to vision, hearing, and talking constantly; standing, sitting, walking, handling, and fine dexterity frequently; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, and foot controls occasionally; kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, and balancing rarely.

    Working conditions involve exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and bodily fluids.
