The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating, and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position DutiesDuration of Assignment: Approximately six (6) months internship duration. Internship may be extended based on project needs.
Salary Information: The Public Works Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern in the City Facilities Architectural Services Division. Salary ranges for this classification are:
Student Intern Salary Range: $15.86- $22.65/hourly (unbenefited)
Graduate Student Intern Salary Range: $20.52- $30.30/hourly (unbenefited)
These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.
About the City Facilities Architectural Services Division Internship:The City Facilities Architectural Services (CFAS) Division has the primary responsibility for the delivery of capital improvements projects on City properties and provides design and construction services for public buildings, landscape improvements, and capital maintenance projects, including recreational facilities, parks, trails, libraries, public safety facilities, and various cultural facilities.
The City Facilities Architectural Services (CFAS) Division Intern will be assigned to support the division’s capital improvement project admin team. The candidate would contribute to the delivery of capital projects on City properties with the review of contract change order, service orders, and invoices. They will also conduct budgetary review and complete expenditure transfer, liquidations and adjustments at the direction of the Division’s budget team. Additionally, the intern would provide general administrative support to the CFAS Division.
Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate Student Intern: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.
Graduate Student Intern: Completion of a bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university.
Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.
Other QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable qualifications for this position include:
- Enrolled as an Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field undergraduate/graduate student in an accredited college or university
- Basic understanding of accounting principles, financial statements and reports
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
- Strong numerical and analytical skills; high accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and meet deadlines

BenefitsPart-time positions (less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.
Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
