    Job Description:

    Maintenance Worker Leader

    Purpose:

    Under general supervision, this position performs building maintenance services on City facilities and acts in a lead capacity over other Building Maintenance personnel.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    • Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance. Repairs and replaces electric plugs and cords. Performs minor repairs to tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, etc. Performs semi-skilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of walls, ceilings, doors, etc. Installs and/or replace floor and ceramic tiles.
    • Drives vehicles as needed.
    • Moves furniture, file cabinets, equipment, etc using hand dollies.
    • Performs basic service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, etc repack, change oil and filters, lubricate, etc.
    • Operates drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc. Operates various power saws, i.e., radial arm, skill, etc. Operates acetylene cutting torch, welder, etc.
    • Performs simple plumbing installations and repairs i.e., install and repair faucets, unclog drains, replace valves, etc.
    • Paints varnishes, and/or seal walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, equipment, etc using brushes, rollers, air sprayers, etc.
    • Hammers nails and stakes. Installs door closers, kick plates, locks, etc.
    • Measures using tapes, transits, levels, etc.
    • Reads profiles and blueprints.


    Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

    Train and lead employees. Supervise work unit in absence of supervisor.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in repairing and maintaining facilities.
    • Knowledge of Local ordinances and building codes.
    • Knowledge of basic plumbing methods, and materials used in routine carpentry, equipment, methods, and materials used in moderate levels of construction.
    • Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures.
    • Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in ground maintenance.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in planning and organizing.
    • Ability to operate power tools and mechanical equipment.
    • Ability to read and understand simple blueprints.
    • Ability to perform emergency and routine repairs and maintenance.
    • Ability to lead and train others.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with City employees and the public.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years of experience in building maintenance work including heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems.
    • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    Texas Class C Operator's License.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Technical: Sufficient knowledge to troubleshoot and repair various types of machinery.
    • Trade Skills: Comprehensive knowledge to effectively diagnose and repair plumbing, electrical, and carpentry projects for building renovations.
    • Tools and Equipment: Familiarity with using various hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to perform assignments and tasks.
    • Technical Drawings: Ability to understand and follow technical drawings, building plans, schematics, and blueprints.
    • Leadership: Prior experience providing leadership, mentoring, and performance monitoring.
    • Work Order Management: Familiarity with work orders from producing, creating, distributing, and signing off.
    • Communication: Ability to effectively communicate with team, contractors, and management both verbally and in writing.
    • Customer Service: Ability to identify customer needs and communicate action plans in a courteous manner
    • Maintenance Management: Knowledge of database tracking systems used to track completed repairs and maintenance, including vehicle maintenance schedules.
    • Travel: Ability to travel to multiple sights as part of regular job duties.


    Notes to Candidate:

    The Austin Public Library is looking for a skilled and motivated Maintenance Worker Leader to join our Facilities Services Division. In this leadership role, you will oversee and coordinate the work of building maintenance personnel, ensuring that our library facilities are well-maintained and functional.

    Your responsibilities will include conducting inspections to identify maintenance needs and performing a variety of maintenance tasks, such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting, and machine repair. Additionally, this position will be responsible for hiring, onboarding, training, and evaluating the performance of assigned staff.

    Salary Range :

    $23.76 - $27.32

    Hours and Schedule :

    Full Time/40 hours per week
    • Employee will be assigned to either Shift 1 or Shift 2, depending on business need.
    • Shift 1 - Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
    • Shift 2 - Tuesday - Friday, 1:00 p.m. - 9:30 pm, including Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
    • May occasionally work beyond assigned shift
    • Must be able to respond to off-hour emergencies

    NOTE: Hours and schedule may vary based on operational and business needs, which may include working evenings, weekends, city emergencies, and holidays.

    DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:
    • This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
