    LIBRARY ASSISTANT II

    SALARY INFORMATION

    Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

    OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

    This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current/future Library Assistant II full-time positions within the OC Public Libraries. The eligible list established may also be used to fill similar and lower-level classifications throughout the County of Orange.

    OC PUBLIC LIBRARIES
    OC Public Libraries is a network of 29 branches serving 23 cities and unincorporated areas of the County of Orange, plus a branch for Orangewood Children's Home residents. We provide residents with access to books, digital resources, programs, and knowledgeable staff to support learning, reading and community engagement. OC Public Libraries is a division of OC Community Resources.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The Library Assistant II works in conjunction with other library staff (Librarians, Sr. Library Assistants, and Library Assistants I) to perform a wide variety of duties which require specific knowledge of library rules, procedures and practices.

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Assisting patrons with reference questions and providing guidance on library resources
    • Utilizing automated systems to search and process patron requests for books and other library materials
    • Performing circulation desk tasks, including checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, and handling monetary transactions
    • Processing new library materials to ensure proper labeling, branch assignment, and cataloging
    • Maintaining the upkeep of library facilities by shelving materials accurately and identifying items in need of repair
    • Preparing exhibits, displays, or other publicity materials to promote library services
    • Assisting Librarians in creating and implementing special programs or events
    • Providing patrons with instruction on how to use various types of library resources and equipment
    • Maintaining library equipment and notifying supervisors if equipment is broken or not working properly
    • Training and guiding volunteers
    • Copy cataloging and performing quality control of catalog records
    • Obtaining quotes and ordering supplies or other materials from vendors
    • Tracking office supply budgets
    • Assisting in opening and closing procedures for branches and/or departments
    • Recommending books and other library materials for purchase and withdrawal under the guidance of Librarians
    • Participating in community outreach and engagement events to promote library services and programs
    • Participating in systemwide committees and workgroups to support library initiatives and collaborative projects


    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION & CORE COMPETENCIES
    The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge and experience in the following core competencies:

    • TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
      • Processing monetary transactions and utilizing a cash register and credit card reader
      • Working knowledge of the SIRSI database, interlibrary loan programs, Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), or other similar library systems/programs
      • Facilitating the use of e-devices, troubleshooting, and current reading technology and trends, troubleshooting computer and printer problems; understanding technology terms and vocabulary
    • CUSTOMER SERVICE
      • Providing excellent customer service using library best practices
      • Assisting with and/or creating branch programs and providing outreach
      • Facilitating branch programs such as book groups and story time
    • ORAL & WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS
      • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
      • Communicating technical information in a clear and understandable manner
      • Composing correspondence and reports


    Special Note: OC Public Libraries provides service to various locations seven days a week. Incumbents should be prepared to work weekends, evenings, and rotate to various locations. These positions have a set schedule and are not on call. Schedules are subject to change on a case-by-case basis.

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS
    Human Resource Services (HRS) screens all application materials for minimum qualifications. After screening, candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be referred to the next step in the recruitment process. All candidates will be notified via email of their status in the process.     Online Multiple-Choice Exam (Weighted 100%)
    An online multiple-choice exam consisting of job-related questions will be administered. Candidates who pass this exam will be placed on the eligible list.

    Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedure above may be modified. Candidates will be notified of any changes in the process via email.

    Eligible List
    Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
