The Position Curators perform a broad range of professional and technical museum work involving, but not limited to, assessment, evaluation, survey, inventory, preservation, research, education and planning for a specific collection and/or program area within a museum.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
The Nevada State Museum (NSM), part of the Division of Museums and History within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, seeks a Curator 3 of History. NSM is a public institution focused on the natural and human history of the region, serving K-16 students, lifelong learners, and researchers through exhibits, programs, and collections. The museum emphasizes community engagement through tours, public events, and educational outreach. The Curator 3 of History provides leadership and oversight for the History Department, which manages collections spanning from the pioneer era to the present. The Curator collaborates closely with the Curator 3 Registrar and reports to the Museum Director. Key responsibilities include managing historical collections through processing, cataloging, preservation, and inventory. The Curator maintains departmental procedures and databases, contributes to strategic planning and budgeting, and supervises staff and volunteers. The role also involves fundraising, securing research funding, and preparing reports for the Board of Museums and History. The Curator plays an active role in daily operations and public engagement, including in-house and off-site programming. They conduct research, produce public-facing media on Nevada history, respond to research inquiries, and collaborate with registrar, education, and exhibits staff to support museum-wide initiatives. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, prehistory, natural history, museum studies, education, or closely related field plus three years of professional experience in a museum. This experience must have included direct responsibility for museum collections involving the preparation of exhibit text regarding complex technical information, and/or developing, promoting, executing and evaluating educational programming; OR one year of experience as a Curator II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Working nights, weekends, and holidays required. This position has a 25 % travel requirement.
