    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Local 1 - Building Trades Unit

    The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is currently recruiting to fill two (2) Electrician vacancies in the Facilities Maintenance Division. All interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

    Electricians service, maintain, and install various types of electrical work which may include traffic signals, building electrical systems, alarms, and communication equipment in buildings and facilities. Although Electricians are assigned to the Public Works Department, work is done in all County buildings including jails, hospitals, juvenile hall, clinics, social services buildings, libraries, homeless shelters, sheriff stations, mental health wards, etc.

    The Contra County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.

    What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Performing electrical work in a safe manner
    • Constructing, installing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining a variety of electrical installations, systems, traffic signals, or equipment
    • Planning layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, based on specifications and codes
    • Connecting wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components
    • Testing electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of systems
    • Cleaning, repairing, and maintaining electrical equipment
    • Interacting effectively with co-workers and members of a crew, operating department representatives, County employees, and the public
    • Create and submit project estimate

    Minimum Qualifications

    License Required: Possession of a Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License will be accepted during the application process.

    Experience: Either 1) Completion of an apprenticeship as Electrician in the building trades construction field and at least one (1) year of full-time or its equivalent journey-level experience in commercial or industrial electrical maintenance work; OR 2) Five (5) years of full-time or its equivalent experience in commercial or industrial electrical maintenance work, one (1) year of which must have been at the journey level.

    Other Requirement: Applicants must be able to obtain the Detention Facility Clearance to work in the detention facilities

    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Completion of Arc Flash Training
    • State Issued Electrician Certification


    Selection Process

    Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process. Multiple Choice Examination : A multiple choice examination will be conducted to measures candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include but are not limited to: professional and technical expertise, mechanical insight, safety focus, attention to detail, mathematical facility, adaptability, handling and resolving conflict, and customer focus. (Weighted 30%) Performance Examination : A performance examination will be conducted to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include but are not limited to: professional and technical expertise, mechanical insight, safety focus, attention to detail and oral communication. (Weighted 70%) De partmental Hiring Interview: To be scheduled once the eligible list is established.

    Tentative Dates:

    *The Multiple Choice Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) November, 2025.
    *The Performance Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place 12/3/25 - 12/4/25.

    Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the selection process.

    CONVICTION HISTORY
