THE POSITION VAN DRIVER (LIMITED-TERM) THIS POSITION IS LIMITED-TERM AND INTENDED FOR A SPECIFIED AND LIMITED PERIOD OF TIME UP TO ONE (1) YEAR AND MAY BE EXTENDED FOR AN ADDITIONAL YEAR.
ONE TIME SIGN-ON BONUS: Incentive Amount of $2,500.00.
- $750.00 after successful completion of 4-6 week training program.
- $750.00 upon successful completion of 6 months of employment.
- $1,000.00 upon completion of 12 months of employment with the City.
*PLEASE NOTE: INCENTIVES PAYMENTS WILL ONLY BE ISSUED AFTER THE SPECIFIED MILESTONES ARE VERIFIED. Van Drivers are responsible for promptly and safely transporting passengers and assisting them, as needed, when entering and exiting from the van in a safe manner. This position reports to Transit Operations Manager.
GENERAL DUTIES:
Under general supervision, drives passengers to various locations as assigned;
Operates a van over various routes maintaining a time schedule for completion of routes while transporting passengers in a safe manner;
Collects and accounts for fares accurately;
Displays a kind understanding and patient demeanor showing a sincere concern for the welfare of passengers;
Completes daily work reports via computer to indicate the actual work accomplished and the number of senior citizens transported, & maintains other records as appropriate;
Observes safety rules and regulations;
Performs daily safety check of the van;
Prepares daily work reports using a computer.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience transporting people in a vehicle requiring a class B driver’s license.
- Three (3) years prior to closing date and up to the date of appointment (hire) to the position:
- Applicants may be disqualified for any of the following reasons:
- A conviction record, and/or
- Negative employment references.
- A criminal conviction or administrative suspension or revocation of driver’s license for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
NOTES: A conviction shall include a plea, verdict, or finding of guilt regardless of whether sentence is imposed by the court.Positions in this job classification are considered safety sensitive under Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol regulations and are, therefore, subject to specific employment reference verifications prior to employment and random drug and alcohol screenings during the course of employment.Prior to appointment (hire), candidates must pass a pre-employment medical examination, which will include a drug screen. A positive pre-placement drug test, refusal or failure to test may result in rejection of the candidate.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES:
A valid California Class “B” driver license with Passenger endorsement is required at time of application.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Employees must be available for at-will part-time or at-will full-time work assignments and may be scheduled to work between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., seven (7) days a week, including holidays. Over-time work assignments may be offered.

Limited Term AppointmentA Limited Term Appointment:
Is unclassified and intended for a specified and limited period of time; andMay be made for defined projects or employment tasks, and shall not exceed twelve (12) months in duration except as extended for up to one (1) additional year but not to exceed two (2) years total with approval by the Human Resources Director; andShall be compensated at an hourly rate within the established salary range for that classification; and May or may not receive the associated benefits of the classification occupied as determined by the appointing authority; andDoes not accrue seniority or other rights provided to Classified employees, unless otherwise provided for in the Rules.
