    Essential Job Functions

    Depending on the assignments, Public Works Laborers are responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:
    • Repairs infrastructures
    • Performs grounds maintenance
    • Transports tools and materials
    • Maintains safety signage, markers, and reflectors
    • Interacts with co-workers and members of the public
    • Performs routine maintenance on waterways, wastewater pump stations, and sewer systems
    • Employs safe work practices
    • Documents work performed

    Requirements

    Requirements to Qualify:
    No training or experience is required.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. A valid California Class A or Class B Driver License, and special endorsements to drive assigned vehicles may be required for some positions in this class.

    License:
    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    The County is required to align with the Federal regulations which require pre-employment, post accident, reasonable suspicion, return to work, follow up, and random urine drug and breath testing of employees who carry commercial driver licenses and who are assigned to drive certain vehicles.
    Physical class:
    Physical Class IV - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
    A SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION:
    In accordance with TITLE 5 - PERSONNEL, APPENDIX 1 (Civil Service Rule 11.03) of the Los Angeles County Code, selective certification may be used for some positions in the following work locations:
    • North County (Lancaster, Palmdale, Santa Clarita, Castaic, Little Rock)
    • West (Malibu, Agoura Hills)

    Examination content:

    This examination will consist of a multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 100%, assessing:
    • Achievement
    • Responsibility
    • Safety Orientation
    • Thoroughness
    • Mechanical Comprehension

    You must meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the test parts in order to be placed on the eligible list.
    Exam Review:
    Some exam components are not reviewable by candidates per Civil Service Rule 7.19.
    Transfer of test components
    If you recently took identical components for other exams, the test responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.
    Test preparation:
    We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

    Eligibility and Vacancy Information:
    Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of Twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur.
