The Position Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
The Nevada Department of Corrections is recruiting for a Psychiatric Nurse 3 to be located at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City, NV. The incumbent in this position will serve as a Nursing Supervisor overseeing the RMF INF staff and offenders in a correctional hospital setting. Work responsibilities include but are not limited to: Providing professional nursing care to inmates, medication management and administering medications as prescribed by the agency psychiatrist and monitoring for side effects, maintaining client safety, assist in physically restraining inmates who are a threat to themselves or others, triage and assess inmate's physical and mental health status and recommend admission for inpatient or outpatient services, develop/implement nursing discharge plans, and educate patients and families on medications and special care requirements. Work Shifts: Typically, Weekdays Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday from 5am-3pm (position may be four 10-hour days)

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and three years of professional nursing experience, two of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience. Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
