The Position
Statisticians gather statistical and other data and perform routine analysis and computations; compile reports and prepare charts, graphs, maps and diagrams to display the data and analysis.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Nevada Department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Statistician II located in The Offender Management Division, in Carson City, NV. This incumbent gathers statistical and other data and performs routine analysis and computations; compiles reports and prepares charts, graphs, maps and diagrams to display the data and analysis. Statisticians gather statistical data by assisting in preparing, distributing and reviewing survey forms and questionnaires and/or contacting sources to obtain necessary information. They compile, edit, compute and perform routine analysis of collected data such as verifying its consistency with previously submitted information or to determine if it falls within established statistical parameters. Incumbents create summary tables, charts and graphs, and simple narrative text of compiled data for incorporation into reports or publications. The statistician maintains databases by inputting information gathered and generates ad hoc reports for use by professional and/or management staff.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in economics, mathematics, statistics or closely related field and one year of paraprofessional experience assisting in the preparation, collection and analysis of data; and preparing visual displays using computer software; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of paraprofessional experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Statistician I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
