    Position Description

    The Fresno County Department of Public Works and Planning invites applications for the position of Building Inspector I. Incumbents inspect the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial and residential buildings to assure conformance with pertinent codes, ordinances and regulations, and assist contractors, architects, engineers, and the public.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Applicants must qualify under one (1) of the options listed below:

    OPTION 1 :
    Certificate : Certificate of Completion from a building trade apprenticeship program recognized by the California Apprenticeship Council, the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, or a State Apprenticeship Council authorized by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.

    Experience : Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience in one of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or related structural/mechanical work such as steam fitting, heating, and/or air conditioning, or as a licensed building contractor.

    OPTION 2 :
    Experience : Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience in one of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or related structural/mechanical work such as steam fitting, heating, and/or air conditioning, or as a licensed building contractor.

    OPTION 3 :
    Experience : Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience in one of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or related structural/mechanical work such as steam fitting, heating, and/or air conditioning, or as a licensed building contractor.

    Certificate : Possession of a certificate as an inspector issued by the International Code Council (ICC) or other recognized authority in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or related structural/mechanical work such as steam fitting, heating, and/or air conditioning.

    In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required:

    License : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

    Other : Incumbents must obtain and/or possess a valid certificate as an inspector issued by the International Code Council (ICC) or other recognized authority in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or related structural/mechanical work such as steam fitting, heating, and/or air conditioning within the probationary period or be rejected on probation. Incumbents must maintain valid qualifying certificate throughout duration of employment within the Building Inspector series.

    Note : Under the California Health and Safety Code Section 18949.28 (b), any Fresno County employee who is currently and has continuously been employed as a construction inspector, plans examiner, or building official since January 1, 1994, shall be exempt from the certification provisions until that person obtains employment with a different employer.

    Recruitment and/or certification may be limited to candidates with an experience background related to the specific vacancy in one of the aforementioned qualifying trades as authorized by the Director of Human Resources.

    SELECTION PROCESS:

    Pursuant to Fresno County Personnel Rule 4 - Selection Process, applicants may be required to complete an examination process and successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.

    Please Note:
    • The eligible list for this recruitment may be extended up to 12 months, and may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions.
    • Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.


    REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS:

    Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.
