This is a provisional appointment opportunity. Provisional appointments are temporary and valid until a priority or eligible list becomes available for the classification. Provisional appointments are valid for 150 days unless extended and approved by the Department of Human Resources. If you would like to be considered for this position permanently, you will be required to complete the Human Resources examination process. If you are not selected to fill the position on a permanent basis, your provisional appointment will be terminated. For City Employees: if you hold permanent status in another classification, you will be reinstated back to the position you held before the provisional appointment.
The Department of Financial Management oversees the City’s financial and fleet services operations and serves as a financial adviser to the City Manager and City Council. The Department is organized into the following bureaus: Administration, Accounting, Budget Management, Business Services, Commercial Services, Fleet Services and City Treasury. The Department’s mission is to help the City Manager, Mayor and City Council keep the City financially strong, and to provide high quality fleet operations.
The Fleet Services Bureau provides vehicle and equipment acquisitions, preventative maintenance, unscheduled repairs and fueling services to City departments to ensure they have safe, reliable, cost-effective equipment and vehicles to accomplish their operational goals and purpose. The Fleet Services Maintenance Division provides maintenance for all the City Of Long Beach vehicles, equipment, boats, and helicopters. Fleet Services maintains over 2,000 units at several locations around the city. THE POSITIONThe Bureau currently has
two Equipment Mechanic I Provisional openings in the Maintenance Division on the Heavy Line.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to various City vehicles and equipment such as light duty vehicles, heavy duty vehicles, emergency response vehicles, trucks, heavy duty trailers, and small engines;
- Conducts analysis of vehicle and equipment performance problems utilizing diagnostic software;
- May install specialized safety equipment, wiring, lighting and electronic devices based on vehicle operations;
- Utilizes the M-5 Fleet Management system software to generate reports, create and complete work orders and communicate with customers;
- Performs tests to ensure that vehicles are compliant with local, state and federal regulations;
- May assist in the oversight of Garage Service Attendants;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILECandidates must meet Option A OR Option B:
A) Three (3) years of paid, full-time equivalent recent experience in gas or diesel equipment repair, which must include at least two years as a journey-level equipment mechanic, with the ability to do mid-major work on automotive and heavy duty equipment
OR B) Completion of two (2) years or equivalent of formal training or education in automotive or heavy equipment repair from an accredited vocational or community college program i.e., an apprenticeship or graduation from a vocational or community college program in an automotive, diesel, or related field. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of electronic engine controls, computer control systems, emission control systems, air conditioning, fuel injection, air brake systems, printed circuit wiring, diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
- Willingness to comply with the Anti-Drug and Alcohol Misuse Prevention Program as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.
- Willingness to work night shifts, stand-by, weekends, holidays and overtime as required and to fully participate in continued training after appointment.
- Positions in the Department of Financial Management, Fleet Services Bureau require the willingness and ability to respond to emergency calls within a 30-minute timeframe.
- A valid motor vehicle operator's license must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of the selection interview.
- Positions in the Department of Financial Management, Fleet Services Bureau require proof of a Class A or B driver's license prior to completion of probation.
