    Job Summary

    Under the supervision of the Executive Director of HRL, this position serves as the Safety Officer for Housing and Residential Life. The Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations and developing measures to assure the safety of faculty, staff, and students, with respect to chemical, mechanical, electrical, environmental and bio safety. This position is responsible for providing training to HRL Facilities staff including tracking their attendance and follow up with those employees not in attendance.

    Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Policy Creation and Update - Review, Revise, Rewrite, and Create Standard Operating Procedures related to EHS. Develop safety-related policies and programs, standard operating procedures, "if and then". Review and update existing policies and measures, as needed, ensuring compliance with legislation.
    • Inspections and Safety Review - Investigate and document incidents, write reports, develop solutions to prevent. Also investigate near miss events. Take action to correct problems regarding facility issues as related to health and safety (e.g. investigate reports of leaks, odors, unsafe or faulty equipment, lack of machine guards, student/faculty/staff compliance issues, etc.). Meet with supervisor(s) to determine future needs with respect to safety and facility issues, and provide training as needed.
    • Training - Develop and give general, remedial or specialized training to faculty, staff and students as needed. Coordinate Emergency Evacuation Drills for Residence Hall Communities. Provide Safety Data Sheets and/or Safety Data Sheet-type information upon request.


    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    The ideal candidate must possess a thorough understanding of State and Federal safety and environmental health laws and codes, as well as CSULB policies, and be capable of managing hazardous materials and waste while supporting teaching and research activities in full compliance with regulatory requirements. They should be adept at planning and conducting complex health hazard investigations, analyzing situations to take effective action, and evaluating current regulations to recommend necessary program changes. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for engaging with individuals and groups, and the ability to work collaboratively with a highly diverse population is critical to enhancing program effectiveness and fostering cooperation. Additionally, the candidate must be able to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced environment and possess general knowledge of utilities and facility-related issues.

    Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

    Education and Experience

    • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience required. A minimum three years of progressively responsible professional experience in safety and regulatory compliance in a comparable setting is required, five years is preferred.

    Physical Summary

    • Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.


    Licenses / Certificates

    • Certificate in occupational health and safety.

    • Valid CA Driver License is required.

    Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

    Compensation

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,877 (Step 1) - $8,561 (Step 20) per month.

    Time Base

    1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

    Duration of Appointment

    This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
