    Essential Job Functions

    A Senior Construction Inspector ho lds accountability for a blend of the subsequent crucial job duties:

    • Inspects construction sites and projects
    • Conducts field inspections of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations
    • Coordinates materials testing
    • Coordinates inspections with other city departments and private utilities
    • Prepares and maintains accurate and detailed inspection reports
    • Advises property owners, architects, engineers, and contractors of code requirements
    • Leads and trains new Construction Inspectors
    • Observes reported problems or violations
    • Recommends corrective actions
    • Utilizes software applications
    • Communicates effectively
    • Determines quantities of work completed
    • Maintains current knowledge of technical and regulatory changes


    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY

    OPTION 1
    Four years of experience in the supervision or inspection of civil infrastructure engineering construction work, including reading and interpreting complex construction documents and making calculations therefrom.

    OPTION 2
    Two years of experience as a Construction Inspector in the service of the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works*.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    * Candidates applying for option II must have County status as a Construction Inspector, demonstrated by holding or having held the position for the required time. Out-of-class experience will not be accepted.

    No withhold will be allowed. Required experience must be fully met by the last day of filing and clearly indicated on the application.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of TWO (2) parts:

    PART I:

    A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted at 60%, assessing:

    Candidates are unable to review multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s) according to Civil Service Rule 7.19.

    PART II:

    A Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E), weighted at 40%, evaluating:

    • Technical experience in construction inspection
    • Knowledge and application of codes, standards, and safety regulations
    • Experience with reviewing plans and specifications
    • Experience identifying construction issues and recommending solutions


    Applicants must receive a combined passing score of 70% or higher to be added to the list.

    Transfer of test components:
    If you have taken identical components recently to other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.
    Test preparation:
    We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

    Eligibility and Vacancy Information:
    Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of Twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur.
