The Position
Life & SafetyInspector's survey and inspect public buildings, commercial and private industries and offices, and determine compliance with fire, life safety and hazardous materials codes and regulations, fire prevention laws, and State and federal safety standards.
The Department of Public Safety is recruiting to underfill a Fire & Life Specialist 2 position within the Fire Marshal Division in Carson City. This position involves performing a variety of fire prevention activities addressing hazards of fire, explosion, and conditions hazardous to life, property, environment, and the public welfare. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to, conducting inspections of facilities where hazardous materials are used, stored, or manufactured to determine compliance with fire prevention laws, codes, and regulations. Provide critical safety information regarding hazardous material use, storage, and chemical compatibility. Explain proper storage and removal techniques. Conduct fire inspections of technical and hazardous occupancies and new construction. Enforce State codes relating to building and fire prevention. Investigate complaints of code violations and apply general codes and regulations. Notify owners/operators of violations, dates for reinspection, and enforcement activities. Developing and conducting fire and life safety education programs for the public, building owners, and community groups to promote fire prevention and awareness. Maintaining detailed records of all inspections and investigations, preparing reports, and issuing permits. The ideal candidate will possess a Certification with the International Code Council as a Fire Inspector or experience in hazardous materials and a strong understanding of state and local fire prevention codes and regulations. Flexibility is essential, as the work schedule may include nights, weekends, and holiday. The work schedule for this position is variable; shifts may include shifts beyond the typical 7:00 am to 4:00 pm timeframe. Use of a State vehicle is required to perform field duties; statewide travel may be required.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in fire science, chemistry, environmental science or closely related field and one year of experience involving public contact and the application of policies to specific situations; OR two years of experience in an industrial or mining operation, construction trade, or fire/environmental protection field, one year of which included consultation and assistance with hazardous materials cleanup, site remediation, storage and transport issues or hazardous materials recognition, safety and enforcement; OR certification as a Nevada State Fire Inspector I, National Fire Protection Association Fire Inspector I, or as a Fire Inspector I with the International Code Council; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Incumbents at the Fire & Life Safety Inspector I, must obtain certification at the Hazardous Materials Awareness level, issued by the Nevada State Fire Marshal, within one year of appointment and maintain the certification as a condition of continuing employment. Incumbents, at the Fire & Life Safety Inspector I, must obtain certification as a Nevada State Fire Inspector I, National Fire Protection Association Fire Inspector I, or as a Fire Inspector I with the International Code Council within the first year of employment and maintain the certification as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this series must submit to a pre-employment screening test for controlled substances. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting is required. Frequent and statewide travel is required. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
