    DESCRIPTION

    SALARY INFORMATION:
    Grade I- $50.747 - $69.068 Hourly
    Grade II- $56.128 - $76.456 Hourly

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under direction, performs responsible, professional-level work in the preparation, review and management of environmental documentation, compliance, policies, programs, and permitting; supervises and reviews work of subordinates; manages consultants working on Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs), Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), dredging projects, mitigation design and environmental monitoring; reviews legislation and engages in the regulatory process, related to CEQA, NEPA, the Coastal Act, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act and mitigation issues and develops recommendations for Port compliance with those statutes; represents the Port of Long Beach at hearings and negotiations with resource and regulatory agencies related to environmental monitoring of mitigation projects, water quality, dredging projects, air quality and climate change projects; designs and reviews monitoring plans for mitigation projects, dredging projects and other projects where monitoring is required; may operate City vehicle as necessary; performs other related duties as required.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Biology, Marine Biology, Geology, Geography, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Planning, Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, or other closely related field. *(proof required).

    -AND-
    • Four years of full-time equivalent, paid professional-level experience in environmental compliance, including a working knowledge of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Coastal Act, the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act and other regulations related to environmental documentation and compliance.

    *Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Ability to communicate scientific and technical information effectively both orally and in writing.
    Willingness to work overtime, weekend and/or holiday hours.

    A valid driver's license must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of the selection.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    An advanced degree in a related field is highly desirable.

    A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
