    The Position

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

    The Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is seeking an Academic Teacher to work at Independence High School located on the campus of the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC) in Elko, NV. NYTC is a 64-bed staff secure facility for male youth ages 12 to 18. Located in Northern Nevada, this full-time teaching position requires the teacher to assess students' goals and report any misassigned students to the Principal. The teacher will instruct within their certification areas, assign appropriate classwork, and ensure students meet Nevada High School diploma requirements. Lessons will include remedial instruction and higher-order thinking skills. The teacher will organize materials, maintain lesson plans and assignments for at least a week in advance, and evaluate students falling behind. Applicants must hold a valid Nevada secondary teaching license and endorsement. The anticipated work schedule is 7 am - 6 pm, Monday - Thursday, with overtime after 40 hours per week.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and completion of the requirements of the Nevada State Board of Education for a teacher's secondary license. Special Requirements Possession of a valid Nevada teacher's secondary license with an endorsement in the relevant field of teaching is required at the time of appointment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, positions in this class have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. This position requires a State of Nevada/FBI background check, at the cost of the applicant. Additional Position Criteria This position requires a valid Nevada secondary teaching license and an endorsement in math, English and/or PE. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
