    The purpose of this position is to fill the void in the Austin Meter Shop and provide assistance on daily tasks. Duties include cleaning, testing, and programing of electric meters, updating billing information to accurately reflect the service type, data entry, and assist as needed in the Meter Shop Warehouse.

    This position requires a financial background investigation and the ability to travel to more than one work location.

    This position is critical to the utility for Advanced Metering Systems and Engineering under the direction of the Electric Metering Supervisor and will provide support of the meter equipment for installation and maintenance of transmission, distribution and generation metering systems for Austin Energy. This position will maintain accurate system of meter types, rates, characteristic configurations, maintain accurate documentation of daily work transactions related to customers, metering gathering and maintaining productivity reports for a technical internal metering operations group.

    Job Description:

    Meter Electrician I

    Purpose:

    Under close supervision, perform installation, removal, repair and testing of electrical meters

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Install electrical metering devices.
    • Check, clean, service equipment, pumps, power tools, etc.
    • Operate electronic testing equipment.
    • Record data on appropriate documentation.
    • Answer citizen questions and provide assistance.


    Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

    None.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of methods, procedures, tools and equipment in testing electrical and electronic metering devices.
    • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical systems.
    • Knowledge of installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical equipment, apparatus, and instruments.
    • Skill in use of tools and various types of test equipment required to test, calibrate electric and electronic meters.
    • Skill in making time calculations to determine meter adjustments.
    • Skill in maintaining accurate records of solar and electronic readings.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other city employees and the general public.
    • Skill in bench-testing various types of metering devices.
    • Skill in reading, interpreting, and preparing electric and electronic diagrams and instruments.
    • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of electric meters.
    • Skill in disassembling and repairing meters in the field using hand tools.
    • Skill in drawing schematics of control circuits.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in a field related to the job
    • Thirty semester hours of college credit in power technology, electronics, communications technology, engineering technology, industrial technology or related field may substitute for one year of the general required experience with a maximum substitution of one year.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    None.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience in metering warehouse operations.
    • Experience with electric meter forms and classes.
    • Experience with Landis+Gyr AMI and associated applications: Command Center, Radio Shop, Tech Studio.
    • Experience with WECO meter testing functions, trouble shooting and maintenance.
    • Experience with L+G 1132 meter programming.
    • Experience with Oracle CCB Utility Billing System.
    • Experience using Microsoft Excel and Outlook with ability to perform basic functions including but not limited to data entry, formatting, send and reply to emails, etc.
    • Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other city employees.
    • Experience operating a forklift and pallet jack.

    Salary:

    $27.77 - $33.95/hr., depending on qualifications and experience.

    City Government
