The Accountant-Auditor role is unique to the Office of the Auditor-Controller and has a broad scope, encompassing county-wide financial activities. The primary mission of the Office of the Auditor-Controller is to ensure the fiscal integrity of the County's financial records and provide excellent service, assistance, and information to the public, Board of Supervisors, County Administrator's Office, County Departments and Employees, Special Districts, and some regional non-county agencies.     This is an exciting time to become a part of Contra Costa County as we are currently accepting applications to fill one (1) Accountant-Auditor I vacancy within the Office of the Auditor-Controller's seven divisions.

    What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Conducting a thorough examination and analysis of a range of financial documents
    • Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial schedules and subsidiary ledgers through the process of reconciliation and maintenance
    • Aiding in the preparation of comprehensive annual financial reports
    • Compiling and submitting Federal and State tax reports in a timely and accurate manner
    • Delivering exceptional customer service to the public and other County Departments
    • Providing valuable support in the audit of County Programs and Departments
    • Assisting in the processing of property tax refunds and the management of property tax rolls

    Minimum Qualifications

    Accountant-Auditor l Il III
    Education: 1) Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, finance, accounting or a closely related field. Course work must have included at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units from among the following accounting courses: Principles of Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Governmental Accounting, Fund Accounting, Cost Accounting, or Auditing; or 2) Possession of a Certified Public Accountant certification, Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) certification, or the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certification.

    Internal Substitution for Education:
    Accountant-Auditor I
    Four (4) years of full time (or its equivalent) experience as an Accounting or Payroll Technician for Contra Costa County and at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units from the above listed accounting/auditing courses, which must be transferrable to an accredited college or university system for credit, may be substituted for the required education.

    Selection Process

    1. Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.

    2. Online Assessment: An online, multiple-choice assessment will be administered to all accepted candidates. This Assessment will measure competencies, including but not limited to Analyzing & Interpreting Data, Mathematical Facility, Attention to Detail, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Using Technology, Building & Maintaining Relationships, Self-Management, and Teamwork. (Weight 100%). Tentative dates for online assessment: December 17 - December 21, 2025.

    3. Final Selection Interviews: Will be scheduled after the eligible list has been established.

    Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the selection process. The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

    CONVICTION HISTORY

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

    All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
