    About the Opportunity

    The City of Ventura is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Aide to join our Public Works Department, specifically working within the Land Surveying Crew. This entry-level position provides valuable on-the-job experience in both office and field engineering work while supporting higher-level engineering staff.

    The Engineering Aide will gain hands-on exposure to a variety of civil engineering tasks, surveys, and project documentation, working under close supervision and guidance. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to start a career in engineering and public works, particularly in the Land Surveying Crew, while contributing to the development and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Perform routine office and field engineering work under direct supervision, with guidance on procedures and rules.
    • Locate utilities, easements, property lines, and other information on plans; assist with filing and retrieving engineering maps, documents, and records.
    • Check parcel maps, subdivision and improvement plans, and other engineering drawings.
    • Assist in measuring distances for determining boundaries, easements, improvements, structures, and topographic features; maintain accurate notes.
    • Conduct field surveys of traffic conditions, signage, striping, and roadway conditions; participate in traffic studies and record data such as speed, volume, traffic flow, accidents, signals, and signs.
    • Operate survey instruments including rods, chains, theodolites, levels, and electronic distance measuring devices; maintain accurate field notes and sketches.
    • Perform standard calculations, prepare earthwork quantities, cost estimates, construction layouts, maps, and visual aids based on design sketches or survey notes.
    • Prepare graphic illustrations and other visual aids; order supplies and materials as needed.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.


    The Ideal Candidate - Preferred Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will:
    • Enthusiastic about gaining hands-on experience in civil and public works engineering.
    • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
    • Comfortable working in both office and field settings.
    • Able to follow instructions closely and learn procedures under supervision.
    • Demonstrates interest in public service and contributing to the City’s infrastructure projects.
    • Strong basic math and technical skills, with an aptitude for learning surveying and design tools.


    Minimum Qualifications - Required

    A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of high school, supplemented by college level courses in mathematics, surveying or drafting are required.

    Licenses/Certificates

    License: Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.

    About the Department

    The Engineering Services Division of Ventura’s Public Works Department leads the planning, design, and execution of the City’s Capital Improvement Program and major infrastructure projects. The division manages surveying, floodplain and pavement management, coastal protection, and capital project procurement, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations. It also maintains Ventura’s Engineering Design Standards, supporting consistent, high-quality project delivery across the City while promoting safe, sustainable, and well-planned public infrastructure.
