    ABOUT THE POSITION

    The Clark County Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Senior Deputy Director of Public Works position. As a member of our team, you will support the Public Works Director in planning, overseeing, managing, and directing all departmental activities. This includes significant short- and long-range capital improvement planning and development.

    The ideal candidate will be responsible and accountable for furthering departmental planning and operational goals and objectives. They will also ensure that assigned division goals and objectives are accomplished within established policies, procedures, and guidelines.

    This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources. Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified applicants to the selection process.

    This position is a management position and excluded from membership in the union.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business or Public Administration or a field related to the work, AND four (4) years of full-time management experience in a major public works or similar setting. Possession of an appropriate advanced degree is desirable. Equivalent combination of formal education and appropriate related experience may be considered.

    All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.     Licensing and Certification: Must possess registration as a professional engineer in the State of Nevada. If registered in another state, must obtain Nevada registration within one (1) year of the date of hire.

    Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

    Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

    Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the department.
    • Coordinates the preparation and administration of division budgets for assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Plans, organizes, administers, reviews and evaluates the activities of professional, technical, maintenance and office support staff through subordinate managers and supervisors.
    • Contributes to the overall quality of the department's service provision by developing and coordinating work teams and by reviewing, recommending and implementing improved policies and procedures.
    • Prepares material for and makes presentations to the Board of Commissioners, various advisory boards and commissions, citizen groups and County management to formulate policies and plans related to such diverse areas as capital improvement projects, community development and road and facilities maintenance.
    • Reviews and evaluates program and service delivery and makes recommendations for improvements and ensure maximum effective service provision.
    • Directs the procurement of professional services and associated contract negotiations and reviews the performance of contract professionals.
    • Represents the department and the County in local, state and national forums and makes presentations before various advisory committees, legislative, regulatory and community groups.
    • Oversees the best interests of the County in negotiations with others to provide services or take action supportive to the County.
    • Directs the selection of staff and facilitates their training and professional development.
    • Interprets regulations and County policies and procedures to employees and ensures effective morale, productivity and discipline of department staff.
    • Confers with members of other departments regarding departmental or County-wide operational matters and facilitates the resolution of problems and the development of coordinated policies.
    • Directs the conduct of analytical studies and develops and reviews reports of findings, alternatives and recommendations.
    • Directs the maintenance of accurate records and files.
    • Prepares and directs the preparation of a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures and other written materials.
    • Monitors and interprets changes in laws and regulations related to transportation, flood control, development and environmental control activities, and land surveying and evaluates their impact upon County activities and develops and implements policy and procedural changes as required.
    • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work; drives a motor vehicle or arranges for appropriate transportation in order to attend off-site meetings and visit off-site County locations.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
