This position will be located at Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Quality, and will be located at the Southeast Regional Office, 2155 N. Westwood Blvd., Poplar Bluff, MO 63901.

We protect environmental quality in 28 counties in Southeast Missouri by helping people and organizations use our natural resources responsibly for the benefit of all Missourians. This position will be in our Public Drinking Water and Clean Water Programs, providing assistance to drinking water and wastewater systems and technical training for drinking water and wastewater operators to ensure all our citizens and visitors have safe and clean water.

• Perform tasks for mandatory operator certification training for drinking water and wastewater operators in the southeast region. Develop training resources and administer training, which includes both classroom and in-plant one-on-one training.
• Provide technical and compliance assistance to facilities, operators, and team members in person, over the telephone, and by email and other electronic means.
• Interpret policy and rules concerning public drinking water and wastewater facilities. Provide feedback to management and the Public Drinking Water and Clean Water Programs as to how well policies are working based on class feedback and field observations.
• Communicate with the public, including receiving concerns from the public and investigating those concerns.
• Respond to other duties as assigned, including infrequent response to environmental emergencies.

This position requires a valid driver’s license.

To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

• Attention to Detail : Thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
• Environmental Science : Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to protect and improve the quality of the environment and its resources; monitor, control, abate, and prevent pollution.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

• A bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline and 4 - 6 years relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed)
• Prefer current Missouri “A”, “B”, or “C” certificate of competency for drinking water and/or wastewater treatment, with preference for the higher levels of certification. Minimum of “D” treatment certification required. Individuals with water and/or wastewater certifications from another state are encouraged to apply if the certifications are active, in good standing, and were obtained by successfully passing an examination in that state. Missouri certification may be possible through reciprocity for states with comparable certification requirements.
• Prefer four years of in-plant operating experience in the operation and maintenance of a public drinking water and/or public wastewater treatment system classified by the Department of Natural Resources as a level “A”, “B”, “C” or equivalent.
• Experience with sampling and analysis of various environmental media, environmental inspection work, training of staff, and emergency management.
