ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Clark County Department of Aviation (DOA) is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Carpenter position. This position performs rough and finish carpentry in the repair, maintenance, remodeling and construction of wooden, concrete, metal and related elements of DOA buildings and facilities. Additionally, responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, metal framing, layout, sheetrock, commercial door and frame installs, cabinet/picture frame making, drop ceiling grids installation and maintenance, and solid surface countertop installation.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Employee Services.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation and Experience:Equivalent to graduation from high school AND six (6) years of skilled experience in the carpentry or cabinetry building trades. Successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a carpenter may be substituted for four (4) years of the required experience. Attendance at a recognized trade school is desirable. Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see attached resume" on your application.
Working Conditions: Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations. Work with exposure to asbestos and other hazardous materials.
Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Class C Nevada Driver's License at time of appointment.
Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.
Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.
Residency Requirement: Permanent employees must maintain a principal place of residency within the boundaries of Clark County and provide proof of compliance with Nevada motor vehicle registration and drivers' license laws within 90 days of employment.
Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Background Check: Employment with the Department of Aviation is contingent upon completion of an education/experience background investigation, a fingerprint-based criminal history record check processed by the FBI, and upon the ability to be granted a security badge as mandated by the Transportation Security Administration. Customs and Border Protection Security Seal Program: Employment with the Department of Aviation in this job title is contingent upon a ten year employment and five year residency history record check and the ability to present original identity based documentation in order to meet the requirements for a Security Seal.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSMobility to work in a typical shop or related maintenance setting, including operating typical trade equipment, hand and power tools and standard office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle to various work sites; stamina to stand, walk and climb and to work in confined or awkward spaces for an extended period of time; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Participates in the design, layout and planning of office, public facility, shop, and other remodeling, repair or modification projects affecting County buildings and facilities; takes measurements; prepares working drawings and sketches; assists in preparing project specifications.
- Drives County vehicles to work sites and transports materials and assistants as required.
- Estimates materials, tools and equipment needed for work assignments; orders and picks up materials and supplies from outside vendors as appropriate; prepares cost estimates for job.
- Performs skilled carpentry work, including the preparation of concrete forms, may place and finish concrete; frames platforms, walls, decks, booths and partitions; may install and tape sheetrock; installs finish material such as baseboards, trims and moldings.
- Repairs and installs doors and door hardware; changes and keys locks; installs security hardware.
- Constructs and modifies cabinets and office furnishings, including bookcases, tables, chairs, benches and specialized furniture.
- Installs and maintains acrylic, Formica and other surfaces on counters and walls.
- Installs and repairs roofing materials; patches and makes emergency repairs to existing roofing.
- Installs and repairs ceiling panels, sound proofing, insulation and flooring materials associated with carpentry projects; performs necessary painting to complete work.
- Assembles and installs movable wall panels in offices; orders channels and wall panels to meet departmental needs.
- Maintains and services carpentry equipment and hand and power tools; keeps small inventory of frequently used supplies and hardware.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- May direct the work of less skilled assistants on specific projects; ensures that proper safety precautions are followed.
- May fabricate and modify gutters, ducts, down-spouts, drains, bins, shelving and other sheet metal work.
- Maintains records of work performed and materials used.
