Job SummaryCity of Olathe - Solid Waste Team Supervisor Position The City of Olathe is seeking a hands-on, customer-focused Solid Waste Team Supervisor to lead the daily operations of the Olathe Community Recycling Center. In this role, you will supervise a dedicated team of employees who perform various roles to support the center, while ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible processing of recyclable and compostable materials. As the team’s front-line leader, you will coordinate the collection, consolidation, and disposal of materials; oversee the purchase and re-use of recyclable products; support staff training and performance; and help maintain a clean, welcoming facility for the community. This position works under the direction of the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent and plays a key role in creating a positive experience for residents who use the center.
About the FacilityThe Olathe Community Recycling Center-located at the corner of Hedge Lane and 127th Street-is a year-round, drive-through drop-off site available exclusively to Olathe residents. Visitors can drop off yard waste, compost food waste, recycle household materials, and pick up compost and mulch at no cost. The center is a highly valued community resource, supporting sustainability and waste-reduction efforts across the city.

For more details, review the full job details and requirements below.- Oversee refuse collection equipment for daily operations by conducting a pre-operations inspection, routine maintenance, and cleanliness of the equipment to evaluate proper working condition. Ensure the equipment and vehicles associated with the division are operated in compliance with Federal, State and local codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Oversee completion of collection route assignments for the assigned work group. Complete daily route assignments and transport refuse to the Solid Waste Transfer Station or approved disposal/recycling/composting facility as directed.
- Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff, oversee implementation of safety procedures and regulations. Participate in the selection, counseling, evaluating and discipline of employees, and implement employee development programs.
- Complete daily reports and related documentation and correspondence for all operations and activities within the area of responsibility.
- Ensure all customer service requests and public inquiries are resolved in a courteous and timely manner.
- Accept a responsible role in implementing the safety culture of the department; ensure the adherence of safe work practices and procedures; ensure compliance of Federal, State, and local codes, ordinances and regulations
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Experience: Two years of experience in assigned functional area is desirable.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Formal or informal education which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air-brake endorsement.
Supervises : Multiple (4 to 8) Solid Waste Collection Operators.
