This high-impact role provides medical, scientific, and clinical leadership across the full spectrum of public health, with the opportunity to shape policy, guide complex health initiatives, and strengthen community partnerships.     THE JOB:
    The County Health Officer will serve as the medical lead for public health and a key member of the department’s executive team, reporting administratively to the Director of Health Services, working directly with the Board of Supervisors, and collaborating closely with the County Executive Officer. Working alongside the Director of Nursing, the Disaster Services Nurse responsible for emergency preparedness, and two Deputy Health Officers, the CHO issues health guidance, coordinates public health response efforts, advises policymakers, monitors emerging trends, and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations. The CHO also provides medical oversight for essential programs, including Juvenile Hall, where they may consult on clinical matters and support the nursing and medical team. The CHO also plays a central role in advancing countywide coordination and partnerships across clinics, hospitals, tribal health organizations, and Behavioral Health. This includes supporting aligned strategies to improve access to care, expanding the Healthcare Coalition, guiding organizations through emerging public health issues, and contributing to accreditation, quality improvement, and internal system improvements. The CHO provides critical medical guidance to nursing and program teams and translates complex scientific information into practical, community-focused recommendations for leadership, staff, and the public.

    INTERVIEW PROCESS:

    Round one interviews will be virtual and held on January 21. Finalists will move forward to a second virtual interview on January 23.     SALARY
    Compensation is based on a five-step salary range, with annual merit-based increases within the salary range.

    RETIREMENT

    HOLIDAYS AND PERSONAL LEAVE
    Mendocino County observes 11 paid holidays per year. Employees are granted 24 - 48 hours of personal leave annually, depending upon Bargaining Unit.

    VACATION
    Accrues at the rate of two weeks per year for three years. Three weeks per year after three years, four weeks after eight years and five weeks after 15 years.

    SICK LEAVE
    Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of 1.25 days per month, or 15 days per year. Accruals are pro-rated for part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours per week, and extra-help employees receive up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of paid sick leave annually.

    The County and the employee share the cost of an employee selected health care plan; enrollment in the plan includes $20,000 Life Insurance.
