Overview
This position will be responsible for performing technical and manual work functions associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of varied traffic signals systems and their electrical components; warning and illumination equipment; street lighting systems; ensuring compliance with approved permits, licenses, plans, specifications; and ensuring compliance with various regulations, standards, and procedures. Performs on-call duties on a weekly, rotational basis.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoots, modifies, tests, repairs and maintains all traffic signal and street lighting system equipment, pulling wires and replacing small parts/fixtures
- Installing streetlight poles and traffic signal equipment; locating underground traffic utility conduit
- Digs trenches, sets poles, installs conduit and pull boxes, sets wiring controllers, installs traffic lights and conductor cable, and makes electrical connections
- Works with various voltages (120/240, 240/480& straight 480)
- Operates machinery and equipment in the performance of duties, Including, but not limited to: bucket truck, digger derrick, concrete saw, air compressor, backhoe, various drills, various hand tools, soldering Iron, generator, chainsaw, circuit testers, fleet vehicles
- Performs fusion and mechanical splicing and Integrity testing of fiber optic and copper cables; Installs fiber optic cable
- Integrates fiber with electronics for traffic camera and systems
- Inspects traffic signal and street lighting systems that are current assets or In construction
- Performs preventive maintenance of equipment and tools
- Cleans and organizes buildings, work areas, vehicles, materials and equipment
- Installs traffic control per TMUTCD to perform Inspection activities as needed; reads and Interprets schematics, blueprints, and other diagrams, technical manuals, NEC electrical codes to Inspect and perform preventative maintenance
- Develops reports on Inspections and findings lo deliver to supervisor(s)
- Provides current status and Information; utilizes work management system to Investigate, troubleshoot, and document repairs In accordance with City, State, and Federal codes, regulations, standards and procedures. Provides administrative support as needed.
- Programs electronic signal controllers, electro-mechanical controllers, electronic conflict monitors, electronic time clocks, and vehicle detectors
- Operates remote access computer terminal to monitor and modify signalized Intersections
- Installs traffic counter and speed analyzers for traffic studies
- Retrieves data from controllers and counters
- Observes traffic control devices lo detect malfunctions and timing errors
- Prepares work orders for repairs or maintenance
- Determines needed supplies
- Prepares written reports and maintains logs and records
- A Traffic Technician is designated as an essential position requiring performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, flash flooding, tornado, Ice storm, winter storm, tropical storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or man-made); required to work on-call after hours/weekends, on a rotational basis, to repair, replace, remove damaged or malfunctioned equipment
- Performs other duties as assigned
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
- Non-Exempt - Full-Time - Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
- Must be available to work additional hours as needed
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
- In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED
- Four (4) years' experience ((Construction, electronic maintenance, traffic signal-related role. Electrical Journeyman license is preferred).
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements
Required
- Valid Texas Class C Driver's License and Proof of Automobile Liability Insurance
- Class A Driver License
- International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician I, Traffic Signal Field Technician II, and Traffic Signal Inspector Certification
- International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Roadway Lighting Technician I Certification or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment (extension requires approval by Department Director/Designee).
Preferred
- Electrical Journeyman license

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
