    JOB SUMMARY
    The Small Engine Mechanic is responsible for repairing and maintaining small tool and related engine equipment, both gas and diesel. Maintains equipment inventory and equipment maintenance records.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Discusses equipment issues, maintenance plans, and work performed with customers.
    • Performs routine engine maintenance, such as lubricating parts and replacing spark plugs.
    • Tests and inspects engines for malfunctioning parts.
    • Adjusts components according to specifications.
    • Repairs or replaces worn, defective, or broken parts.
    • Maintains and repairs small engines, both gas and diesel, including hydraulic equipment.
    • Sharpens all types of blades used on pipe cutters.
    • Assists in the maintenance, repair and operation of the tool room function to include housekeeping.
    • Performs preventative maintenance work, such as checking oil and fluid levels on all equipment.
    • Maintains inventory records on repairs made, parts ordered, and parts inventory.
    • Coordinates work of crew members, assuring completion of necessary tasks.
    • Keeps vehicle records.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    DECISION MAKING
    • This position works under general supervision.


    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Two (2) years’ work experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of small equipment, both diesel and gasoline type engines and hydraulic equipment, to include two (2) years’ experience in the operation, maintenance, and sharpening of pipe cutter equipment.
    • Must successfully complete the required training for operation of equipment within four (4) months of hire date.
    • Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License.
    • Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.


    JOB DIMENSIONS
    • Thorough knowledge of small tools/equipment, to include hydraulics and small engine equipment, both gas and diesel.
    • Working knowledge of safety practices and procedures while making mechanical repairs.
    • Knowledge of various pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
    • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment with accuracy and speed and ability.
    • Ability to create effective working relationships with employees.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to maintain written equipment maintenance records.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
    Physical requirements include lifting/moving up to 50 pounds. Subject to pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, carrying, sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, balancing, handling, fingering and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope. Requires visual acuity, speech and hearing.

    Working conditions are in a shop environment and outside elements with exposure to rain/humid conditions, extreme heat, hot fluids, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, fuel/exhaust fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, snakes, poisonous insects, traffic, rugged terrain and construction sites. Will regularly work near moving mechanical parts. Occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud.

    May be required to work hours other than regular daytime hours such as rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays and on-call.
