Job Summary: The primary functions of an Underground Construction Technician I/II are to install and maintain the underground conduit, vaults, and handholes safely and efficiently. Duties for this position can be physically demanding and require working in an outdoor construction setting.
The salary range for Underground Construction Tech I: $21.01 - $28.37 per hour with a hiring range of $21.01 - $24.69, depending on qualifications and experience. The salary range for Underground Construction Tech II: $23.11 - $31.20 per hour with a hiring range of $23.11 - $27.16, depending on qualifications and experience. Essential Functions: - Performs installation of handholes, pedestals and Fiber optic cables for new and upgrade Broadband services.
- Troubleshoot all aspects of the conduit network to ensure the successful installation of Pulse’s underground fiber-optic network.
- Accurately locate underground cable and duct using cable locator and other methods.
- Performs various labor activities, including running equipment, installing wire, digging trenches.
- Operate trucks, small equipment, hand and power tools.
- Enter and track daily work completion through work management system and other computer programs and communicates job activity progress.
- Maintains dialogue and relationships with the public and city staff on a constructive level by employing effective interpersonal skills.
- Works as an effective part of team by responding to change and special needs with flexibility and in a positive manner and by taking initiative to resolve conflicts with others independently.
- Maintain on-call responsibilities relating to emergency restoration as assigned.

Qualifications: Education: Experience: - Required Level I: 1-year previous experience in labor or trades.
- Required Level II: 2-years previous experience in labor or trades.
Certifications: - Must possess a valid driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Communicate in a positive and friendly manner with coworkers, supervisors and general public.
- Establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers and supervisor.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Operate a variety of light, medium and heavy construction equipment.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Knowledge of standard and emergency operating procedures.
- Inspect and determine status of equipment and unit processes using audio, visual, aromatic and tactile indicators.
- Interpret and apply City policies and safety regulations.
- Digging, sweeping, raking various landscaping materials.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: - Occasional: Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.
- Occasional: Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.
- Frequent: Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools.
- Frequent: Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.
Working Environment: - Frequent: Exposure to routine office noise and equipment.
- Occasional: Exposure to hazards typically found in general office environments where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident.
- Occasional: Exposure to hazards that are predictable or well protected against.
- Occasional: Exposure to marginal to moderate conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.
- Frequent: Exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
- Occasional: Exposure to hazardous conditions that may lead to workplace injury such as working in heights, exposure to fly ash and/or energized electrical equipment.
Additional Working Demands / Conditions: - Incumbent is subject to on-call and call-back work and must be capable of responding to emergency situations upon short notice.
- Mandatory duty rotation will include after-hours and weekend work and must be able to make competent decisions while on duty.
- May be required to be available by cellular phone 7 days a week.
- Incumbent must be able to respond within 30-minutes when called.
