    Job Summary

    The City of Olathe is seeking a dedicated Fleet Maintenance Technician for our 2nd shift team. This role is crucial in maintaining the safety and operational efficiency of our municipal vehicles and equipment, supporting seamless city services. We offer an additional $0.74 per hour shift differential on top of your base pay for a 2nd shift schedule. A shift differential is additional pay offered to employees who work non-standard hours.

    Our Fleet Maintenance shop has a heavy and light side. The primary distinction is based on the size and weight of the vehicle, which dictates the required specialized equipment, facility design, and technician expertise. Separating these functions improves workflow efficiency, safety, and ensures that the appropriate tools and expertise are readily available for each type of vehicle.
    • The heavy side of the shop is equipped to deal with large, rugged commercial and specialized vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR ) of over 10,000 pounds.
    • The light side primarily handles the maintenance and repair of standard, everyday vehicles with a GVWR of up to 10,000 pounds.


    Career Progression: The Fleet Maintenance Technician role includes a four-level progression of Technician I, II, III and IV. Starting level is based on experience and expertise.

    Position Levels & Qualifications:

    Fleet Maintenance Technician I

    • Pay Range: $21.75 to $24.97 depending on qualifications
    • Qualifications: A minimum of two years of education and/or experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience is preferred.
    • Certifications Required: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification.


    Fleet Maintenance Technician II

    • Pay Range: $23.75 to $26.95 depending on qualifications
    • Qualifications: A minimum of three years of education and/or experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair experience is required. Hydraulic experience is preferred.
    • Certifications Required: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification. Combination of three ASE certifications, two of which will be brakes and suspension, the third is choice, EVT F1 or F2.


    Fleet Maintenance Technician III

    • Pay Range: $25.50 to $29.72 depending on qualifications
    • Qualifications: A minimum of six years of education and/or experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience is preferred.
    • Certifications Required: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification. Combination of three ASE certifications, two of which will be brakes and suspension, the third is choice. Heavy side would require F1 or F2 plus F3 and F4. Light side would require F1 or F2 plus L1 and ASE electrical.


    Fleet Maintenance Technician IV

    • Pay Range: $28.00 to $33.20 depending on qualifications
    • Qualifications: A minimum of ten years of experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair. Hydraulic experience is preferred.
    • Certifications Required: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification and all certificates for ASE Master Mechanic. Light side would also require L1 from EVT. Heavy side would require all EVT training.


    Additional Requirements for All Levels:

    • High school diploma or equivalent with coursework in automotive technology. Education in automotive technology through a trade school is preferred.
    • Valid State of Kansas driver's license with a favorable driving record.
    • State of Kansas Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of employment.

    The Fleet Maintenance Technician uses their technical expertise to perform complex skilled maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to automotive, light, and medium duty trucks, and a wide variety of equipment such as but not limited to tractors and lawn mowers to ensure the vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently. This position is part of a four-level career progression of Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III and IV.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures; determines causes, recommends and/or completes repair solutions including but not limited to engine, transmission, brake suspension, hydraulic and electric repairs using proper safety devices and procedures.
    • Performs routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of vehicles and equipment.
    • Performs equipment installation, fabrication, welding, and acetylene cutting for all types of vehicles and equipment.
    • Responds to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including afterhours calls.
    • Maintains accurate and detailed records; reports on repairs performed, equipment usage and condition.


    Qualifications

    Experience:A minimum of three years of training and/or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience preferred.

    Education:A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with course work in automotive technology is required. Trade school is preferred.

    Licenses & Certifications:A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required. A class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required within 6 months of employment.

    Environmental or Physical Demands: May encounter moderate noise levels from vehicles, equipment, instruments, or ventilation systems.
