DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Ensures that construction meets local and national building codes, ordinances and technical specifications through various duties that include, but are not limited to the following:
- Inspects mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or structural systems to ensure they comply with building codes and local ordinances.
- Provides written feedback related to the findings.
- Performs record keeping activities, maintains daily logs, records/maintains photographs taken during inspections and issues violation notices and stop-work orders under supervision of senior technical staff.
- Monitors construction sites periodically to ensure overall compliance with codes.
- Meets with public, contractors, technical professionals, and businesses to respond to inquiries and technical problems.
- Researches and evaluates plans, specifications, and drawings.
- Prepares and submits various technical reports.
- Investigates reported code violations received via 311 and issues notices of deficiencies if/when required.
- Issues municipal citations for noncompliance.
- Attends court proceedings related to issued citations and presents evidence of cited code violations and provides testimony in conjunction with court proceedings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS This position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking, driving, standing on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to heat, cold, rain, floods, uneven walking terrain and other unpleasant working conditions.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a High School Diploma or G.E.D. and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) years of journey level or skilled experience related to the area of inspection to be performed are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS May require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
PREFERENCESPreference will be given to applicants with valid ICC Commercial or Residential building inspector certification.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.** GENERAL INFORMATION SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: None
