Position is contingent on grant funding. Grant for Rising Scholars is funded through June 2028, and the Youth Justice grant runs through December 2028.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
The Retention Specialist for Rising Scholars and the Youth Justice Programs (50% each) works directly with justice-impacted, system-impacted, and formerly incarcerated students, helping them stay enrolled, persist, and achieve their educational goals. Ideal candidates will be passionate about student success, equity, and re-entry support and enjoy direct interaction with students and collaborative, service-driven work. This position will:
- Provide hands-on student support through individualized coaching, proactive outreach, and connection to on-campus and community resources.
- Track student engagement and retention data.
- Serve as a consistent, welcoming presence in the Rising Scholars Center and collaborates with the Youth Justice team to strengthen reentry and retention services.
- The successful candidates must be able to be cleared to work in the Butte County Juvenile Hall and Butte County Jail as part of outreach and student support responsibilities.
Work ScheduleThe work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Over the summer the schedule changes to Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with Friday off. As an exempt position, hours may vary based on departmental needs, for example occasional evening hours for outreach or events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in management, social or behavioral science, special education, counseling, school counseling, occupational therapy or a related field; AND
- One (1) year of experience providing guidance and support to students or participants promoting retention and/or completion of a program in a non-educational or educational program offered at or through a non-educational organization.
Desired Qualifications:- Two (2) years of experience working at a community college.
- Experience in disabled student services, academic coaching, retention and transfer strategies.
- Experience working with social services agencies and collaborating with educational partners.
- Experience assisting students in accessing academic and non-academic resources.
- Experience working with students from underrepresented groups.
- Bilingual proficiency.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
- The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination, based on the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment. The physician will be selected and paid for by the District. Disabilities not related to the essential physical job requirements will not preclude the applicant from being hired.
- Education Code § 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that they are free of active tuberculosis.
