About the OpportunityThe City of Ventura is seeking a motivated Facilities Maintenance Worker to join our team. Under general supervision, this position performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled construction, installation, maintenance, and repair work on municipal buildings and equipment,
Incumbents may be required to work standby on a rotational basis and respond to callbacks within a designated timeframe, as operational needs require. Standby assignments are made at the discretion of the Division Head.
Key responsibilities include:
Electrical
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems, wiring, lighting, controls, motors, and related equipment.
- Perform system modifications and assist in training less experienced staff.
Carpentry
- Repair and construct doors, windows, floors, roofs, walls, cabinets, countertops, and other fixtures.
- Install flooring materials and operate standard woodworking tools and equipment.

- Assist with training less experienced staff.
Painting
- Prepare surfaces and apply paint or finishes to buildings, fixtures, and equipment.
Plumbing
- Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems, fixtures, pumps, and water heaters.
- Clear drains and inspect related heating and ventilation components.
HVAC
- Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of HVAC systems; adjust controls and coordinate with vendors as needed.
General Maintenance
- Purchase materials and complete work orders and documentation.
- Operate a computerized maintenance management system.
- Perform preventive maintenance, maintain tools and equipment, and inspect facilities.
- Move and set up furniture, perform basic locksmith duties, open and secure facilities, and lead assigned temporary helpers.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications - RequiredFacilities Maintenance Worker IAny combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by a specialized apprenticeship or trade school education in facilities construction and maintenance, and a minimum of two (2) years of facilities maintenance and construction experience. Experience should include work with a broad range of building systems, components, and related equipment.
Facilities Maintenance Worker IIAny combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by a specialized apprenticeship or trade school education in facilities construction and maintenance, and at least eighteen (18) months of experience performing duties comparable to a Facilities Maintenance Worker I with the City of Ventura, or approximately three and one-half (3.5) years of directly related maintenance and construction experience.
Licenses and Certifications- Driver’s License (Both Classes): Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license is required.
- Certification (Both Classes): Building Operator Certification at the time of application is highly desirable.
