    Job Description

    What You'll Be Doing

    The Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) - Eligibility Caseworker I determines initial and ongoing eligibility for the Food and Nutrition Services Program, previously referred to as Food Stamps. This program helps low-income households access the food they need for a nutritionally adequate diet and supports overall health and well-being. Caseworkers conduct interviews, collect and verify documentation, and assess eligibility based on program policy, either for new applicants or during scheduled case re-determinations.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Interview clients in person or by phone to gather information for eligibility determinations
    • Assess client needs and provide appropriate referrals to community resources
    • Enter and update case information in NC FAST and related systems to authorize benefits
    • Request, review, and verify documentation per policy guidelines
    • Evaluate data and make accurate eligibility determinations
    • Meet established productivity and accuracy performance standards
    • Maintain timely and accurate documentation
    • Provide backup support for other case managers as needed
    • Manage caseload using electronic document systems (e.g., Hyland OnBase)
    • Complete work reports and follow up on outstanding case actions

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • High school degree or GED
    • Two years of related experience
    • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Experience determining eligibility for DSS programs (Medicaid, FNS, Work First, Child Care Subsidy, Child Support, WIC, or Energy Assistance)
    • Background as a Human Services Technician supporting state or county programs
    • Eligibility determination experience with financial or insurance assistance programs
    • Experience assessing financial need (e.g., financial counseling)
    • Clerical or customer service support for Medicaid, FNS, Work First, or Child Care Subsidy programs
    • Experience working with homeless populations
    • Spanish language proficiency
