The City of Kenai, population 7,900, is a beautiful and quaint coastal Alaskan community, nestled along the shores of the vast Cook Inlet at the mouth of the world-famous Kenai River. Easily accessible from Anchorage via a 30-minute flight or a scenic three-hour drive, Kenai is the heart of the Kenai Peninsula and is well known for its salmon fishing, spectacular views, rich history, friendly community, accessible location, diverse economy, excellent schools and healthcare, local amenities, and an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities provided by the surrounding coastline, trails, rivers, and mountains.
The Kenai Municipal Airport is a city-owned, full-service commercial and general aviation facility that serves as the primary air transportation gateway to the Kenai Peninsula Borough and West Cook Inlet. Situated on 1,200 acres at an elevation of 99 feet, the airport supports a diverse range of aviation activities, including scheduled passenger service, cargo operations, emergency medical response, military alternate operations, and floatplane activity. The airfield includes two runways and a designated floatplane water lane. The airport also maintains two helipads, an FAA Contract Tower, an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station, and a 24/7 Automated Flight Service Station. Two commuter airlines and multiple charter and cargo carriers offer more than 27 scheduled daily passenger flights, providing convenient access to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The airport operates with six full-time employees and an operating budget of $3.7 million, not including capital projects. Airport functions are organized into key operational areas: Administration, Terminal Operations, Airfield Operations, Airport Lands & Facilities, and Alaska Fire Training Facility.
Under the general direction of the City Manager, the Airport Manager provides leadership and administrative oversight for all operations, functions, and personnel of the Kenai Municipal Airport. The Airport Manager directs the development and implementation of airport goals, policies, and priorities; prepares and manages the annual budget; oversees leases and agreements with commercial and general aviation users; and ensures adherence to federal, state, and local regulations. The role includes supervising and evaluating staff, coordinating emergency planning with Police and Fire, and maintaining required FAA safety, security, and certification manuals. The position also administers FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants, participates in airport planning and land management in coordination with the Planning Department and FAA, and represents the City to airlines, tenants, regulatory agencies, and the community.
Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience which allows for a candidate to perform the essential functions of this role will be considered. The selected candidate must be available for varied work schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and seasonal adjustments, and able to respond to emergency call-outs when needed. Desired Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, aviation, airway science, public administration, or related field. Five (5) years of progressively responsible airport management work experience. Two (2) years of supervisory experience. Experience working at an airport that serves large air carrier and passenger aircraft. AAAE Certified Member (CM). AAAE Accredited Airport Executive (AAE) certification.
