    Starting salary up to $36.15/hour* depending upon experience.

    Here at the County of Sonoma, Engineering Aide positions offer opportunities to gain experience toward career growth in the field of sub-professional engineering. As you gain on-the-job training and experience, you can progress through our career ladders. While all of our sub-professional and professional engineering positions require knowledge of algebra and geometry as well as the ability to accurately enter data, conduct reporting, and track and maintain project records, the County offers various starting points for you to begin exploring your career in civil engineering. As an extra-help Engineering Aide, you can gain experience that may qualify you for an alternate appointment to an Extra-Help Engineering Technician I position.

    Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) leads the way to a safe and sustainable community by planning, building, managing, and maintaining Sonoma County's investment in quality services and infrastructure. Working in the office and out in the field, SPI Engineering Aides support the Construction Contract Administration, Engineering Design, Field Survey Crew, Materials Lab, and Transportation work groups. Additional duties may include:

    • Performing construction material testing in the field on County roads and working in the Materials Lab
    • Conducting field surveys, processing survey data in AutoCAD, and reviewing right-of-way maps.
    • Supporting staff with both field and office tasks, collecting data, and verifying calculations

    The ideal Engineering Aide candidate will possess many of the following:
    • The ability to learn to gather and confirm field data, ensure compliance with plans and specifications, and perform PG&E invoice reviews
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and prioritize daily activities
    • Excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with applicants, industry representatives, staff, and other agencies
    • Training and/or experience using drafting software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, etc.
    • A passion for field work, an interest in infrastructure construction and maintenance projects, patience, and a sense of humor to readily accept last-minute assignment changes

    Extra-Help Employment

    Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Intermittent, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most regular employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Intermittent, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of 1,380 hours within any twelve-month consecutive period. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

    This recruitment is being conducted to fill multiple extra-help positions in SPI. This employment list may also be used to fill future extra-help positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

    *Salary is negotiable within the established range.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience: Any combination of experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, academic course work in plane geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and surveying would provide such opportunity. Post high school education in engineering technology, including computer aided drafting and design would be desirable.

    Education: Academic course work in plane geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and surveying which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Course work in an Engineering Technology curriculum leading to an Associate Degree is desirable.

    License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

    The position advertised on this announcement does require possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of: mathematics, engineering maps and records; electronic information systems.

    Ability to: trace simple maps and plans; make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately; learn to operate a wide variety of computer applications; gather data and prepare accurate reports; read and understand technical descriptions; understand and follow oral and written directions; work cooperatively with other staff; climb, stand and walk for sustained periods of time, perform physical tasks such as chopping, digging, flagging, and traffic control, and lift moderately heavy objects; utilize electronic information systems and analyze and interpret such information; communicate effectively with coworkers and the public.

    The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

    An Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (pass/not pass) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's combination of educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities that relate to this position to ensure satisfaction of the minimum qualifications for this position. Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications for the position will be placed on an extra-help employment list and referred to the department. The department may contact candidates from the employment list who possess the most appropriate job-related qualifications for further consideration.
    Additional Information A background investigation is required prior to employment. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation. Failure to sign prescribed forms will result in the candidate not being considered further for that vacancy. Reference information will not be made available to candidates.
