    SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION:

    Due to the Workforce shortage Recruitment, new appointments and current incumbents shall be compensated at Step 7 of the applicable salary range. This is in effect until June 30, 2026, or until it is driven that a shortage no longer exists, whichever is sooner.

    Essential Job Functions

    Some crucial duties include:

    Performs standardized immuno-serological, biochemical, and toxicological tests on specimens such as blood, urine, cerebral spinal fluid or joint fluid. These test detect or quantify metabolic substances, hormones, drugs, or toxic substances.

    Performs quantification, macroscopic and microscopic analysis, various chemical and toxin analysis, or point of care tests on urine, blood, and body fluid.

    Conducts hematological tests such as red blood cell count, reticulocyte, platelet, eosinophil, and leukocyte counts; microscopically examines blood smears for abnormal cells, and performs blood sedimentation tests, hemoglobin determinations, hematocrits, and routine and special coagulation testing.

    Cultures, isolates, and identifies microbiological pathogens, such as, but not limited to parasites, bacteria, fungi, and viruses in blood, sputum, urine, feces, exudates, tissues, spinal fluid, and similar substances using standardized laboratory procedures.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
    To be considered, applicants must submit a completed application and satisfy the following requirements:


    Experience: Six (6) months of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in an approved laboratory blood bank. * - AND- Either one of the following issued by the State of California Department of Public Health**:
    Clinical Laboratory Scientist license -OR-Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist License in one of the following specialties when assigned to a specialized area such as chemistry, microbiology, hematology, toxicology, and immunohematology. ***
    Physical Class 2 - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

    *An approved laboratory is defined as a clinical laboratory that holds a federally issued Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Certificate of Accreditation authorizing the laboratory to accept human specimens for the purpose of performing laboratory examinations, and that is accredited by either the College of American Pathologists (CAP) or The Joint Commission.

    **To receive credit for the required license, you must include a legible copy at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your application. Documentation must be submitted to Cramirez4@dhs.lacounty.gov and must include your name, the exam title, and the exam number. Applicants who currently practice and/or reside outside the State of California must possess a valid and unrestricted California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.

    We do not accept password-protected documents. Ensure documents are unlocked before attaching to your application or sending to the exam analyst.

    NO WITHHOLD WILL BE ALLOWED. Required experience and licensing and certifications must be active and unrestricted at the time of filing and clearly indicated on the application.

    *** Clinical Chemist Scientist License

    A clinical chemist scientist is authorized to perform clinical laboratory tests or examinations classified as high complexity under CLIA in the specialty or subspecialties of chemistry, including routine chemistry, clinical microscopy, endocrinology, and toxicology; immunology, including diagnostic immunology and syphilis serology; and molecular biology.

    Clinical Microbiologist Scientist License

    A clinical microbiologist scientist is authorized to perform clinical laboratory tests or examinations classified as high complexity under CLIA in the specialty or subspecialties of microbiology including bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology; immunology, including diagnostic immunology and syphilis serology; and molecular biology.

    Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist License

    A clinical immunohematologist scientist is authorized to perform clinical laboratory tests or examinations classified as high complexity under CLIA limited to the specialty of immunohematology including ABO/Rh Type or Group, unexpected antibody detection, compatibility testing, and antibody identification.

    Clinical Toxicologist Scientist License

    A clinical toxicologist scientist is authorized to perform clinical laboratory tests or examinations classified as high complexity under CLIA limited to the subspecialty of toxicology.

    Clinical Hematologist Scientist License

    A clinical hematologist scientist is authorized to perform clinical laboratory tests or examinations classified as high complexity under CLIA limited to the specialty of hematology including routine hematology and coagulation.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:

    Examination Content:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of your training, experience, and desirable qualifications based upon application information weighted at 100%.
    Candidates need to achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    Candidates who have received a passing score are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every months (6) months.
