Under the general direction of the assigned Captain, the Firefighter/Paramedic position provides basic and/or advanced life support and firefighting work in the treatment of the sick or injured and firefighting duties in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires along with other rescue related duties as necessary. Additionally the position is expected to learn and understand equipment maintenance and safety techniques to ensure safe and effective operations for the department.
Essential duties and responsibilities include performing basic firefighting operations, ventilating burning buildings, responding to motor vehicle and aircraft accidents, providing medical treatment for patients, transporting the sick and injured, performing general maintenance work, memorizing district and facilities, conducting public education programs, participating in physical fitness exercises, maintaining professional appearance, answering and forwarding incoming phone calls, greeting and assisting the public, preparing and submitting reports, and performing miscellaneous job-related duties.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of patient-care procedures, fire suppression and prevention methods, disaster preparedness, safety practices, office procedures, and applicable laws; ability to use firefighting equipment, communicate effectively, think clearly, work in stressful situations, interpret policies and regulations, operate office equipment, and establish working relationships.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, minimum age of 18, valid driver's license, basic firefighter certification, EMT-Paramedic certification, and the ability to complete a Personal History Statement and pass pre-employment screening and background investigation.
Work environment involves emergency conditions with extreme danger, hazardous materials, and physical exertion. Vision and hearing requirements are also specified.
