Supervises technical personnel in the fabrication and re-manufacturing of public transit vehicle parts, assemblies, and equipment.

Examples of Duties
- Plans, organizes, and assigns work for fabrication shops
- Develops and maintains computer and manual files for payroll, attendance, project budgets, and production activities; prepares daily reports
- Implements and maintains safety programs
- Ensures compliance and promotes aspects of the Environmental Management System to employees and coworkers
- Conducts meetings to inform employees about safety, tool uses, equipment upgrade projects, and other related topics
- Investigates and reports accidents and injuries
- Follows up on ordered parts, equipment, and supplies; administers warranty claims
- Counselssubordinates on compliance with procedures, rules, and regulations
- Conducts first-level disciplinary and grievance hearings
- Analyzes structural failures, identifies problems, and plans and provides assistance to staff to remedy problems
- Conducts meetings to determine users' needs
- Approves completed work/repairs
- Prepares various reports, develops presentations, and oversees special development projects
- Supervises subordinate staff, accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro's safety rules, polices, and procedures
May be required to perform other related job duties
Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:
Education
- Associate's Degree in a related field or equivalent training from a recognized trade school
Experience
- Four years of relevant journey-level experience performing machinist work in the manufacture, assembly, installation, and/or repair of parts and equipment, special tooling, jigs, and fixtures with a minimum of two years of relevant experience operating a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill and lathe
- Experience welding, fabricating sheet metal, and/or reverse engineering materials is preferred
Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
- Will require supervising staff from mechanic classifications when assigned
- Frequent exposure to weather, physical, electrical, mechanical, and chemical hazards
- Shift work
- Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
Essential Knowledge

- Theories, principles, and practices of safe and proper use of tools and other equipment
- Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing maintenance, repair, and procurement of public transit vehicles
- Project planning and budgeting techniques
- Principles of supervision
- Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Business computer software applications, including proficiency in Computer Automated Manufacturing (CAM) software and G & M Codes required to work with multiple axis mills and lathes
- Industrial mathematics
- Basic properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals
- Welding and sheet metal fabrication techniques

- Plan, organize, and monitor the work of technical personnel engaged in the fabrication and re-manufacturing of parts, assemblies and equipment for public transit vehicles
- Operate a vertical mill, horizontal mill and lathe
- Drill, mill, tum and grind ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and other exotic materials for fabrication and remanufacturing
- Read simple and complex prints and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) drawings
- Interpret CAD drawings and convert desired results into final finished production products with an understanding of geometric dimension and tolerances (GOT)
- Read analog and digital gauges; interpret damaged and failed items to conclude results of tensile and shear testing
- Operate computers and Maintenance & Material Management (M3) program terminals and diagnostic equipment
- Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
- Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
- Supervise subordinate staff
- Travel to various Metro offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
- Read, write, speak, and understand English
