What does a Helper, Refrigeration do?
Performs semi-skilled work assisting journey-level refrigeration mechanics in refrigeration and air conditioning installation, heating, ventilation, alteration, maintenance, and repair work.

Essential Job Functions
Detect and repair leaks and makes other minor repairs on refrigeration equipment.
Assists in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of refrigerators, and a variety of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and/or equipment.
Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of steam and hot water heating and related equipment.
Assists in hanging and installing motors, compressors, pumps and fans.
Test, charge, repair, and adjust hermetic and semi-hermetic type refrigeration units and ice machines
Assists in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of furnaces, heaters and forced air or water central heating and/or cooling systems.
Assists in the chemical treatment and testing of water used in heating and cooling systems.
Assists in the cleaning, adjusting, and oiling of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Install and connect piping and tubing for refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Maintains related tools and equipment.
Cleans work areas as necessary.
Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
Option I : One (1) year of experience assisting in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment installation, alteration, maintenance or repair work.
-OR-
Option II : Completion of 600 hours of instruction in heating refrigeration or air conditioning courses in a high school, college, the armed forces of the United States, or other recognized school*.
PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERAT E:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
May require an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Technician Certificate, Levels I and II, in compliance with Federal license requirements as provided in Chapter V, Section 608.

*Recognized is defined as an approved agency such as a community college, trade school or a joint apprenticeship training center. A program that offers a certificate of completion or degree in air conditioning & refrigeration.
To qualify under Option II, include a legible copy of your official transcript from an accredited institution. The document should show the number of hours or units and the type of unit system used (e.g., semester, quarter) and be in English. If not in English, then translation is required. International degrees must be evaluated for equivalency to US standards and indicate the number of units and unit system. Include official copies of all relevant documents. EXAMINATION CONTENT
This assessment type will evaluate the training, experience, desirable qualifications, and education/license you list on your application and supplemental questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system. This assessment is worth 100% of your total score.
Applicants must receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added to the list.
ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION
Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly.
Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the Department of Health Services as they occur.
