ABOUT THE POSITION

The Clark County Coroner/Medical Examiner's Office is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Forensic Nurse Practitioner position. This office serves Clark County, Nevada, which includes Las Vegas and surrounding urban and rural areas, with a combined population of over 2.3 million people. The office also provides postmortem examination services to neighboring counties. The office maintains dual accreditation by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) and the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (IACME). The American Board Certified Medicolegal Dearth Investigators office provides 24/7 coverage, and has excellent administrative support, a family counselor, and highly skilled and experienced medical examiners and forensic technicians. The office has excellent working relationships with law enforcement, public health, medical facilities, and local medical schools. It also has active consultation services with Forensic Neuropathologists, Forensic Anthropologists, Forensic Odontologists, Radiologists and Genetic Testing. The ideal candidate will be responsible for work related to the certification of death, report completion, and collection of evidence/specimens for cases falling under the jurisdiction of the Coroner/Medical Examiner. The candidate will be part of the Medical team and will report to the Coroner.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) AND Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or Graduation from an academic program approved by the Nevada Board of Nursing (NSBN) AND two (2) years of related clinical nursing experience. Board Certification through International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) or similar entity preferred.

Licensing/Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver's License at time of appointment. Must possess at time of appointment and maintain a license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Nevada or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) certification.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assists Medical Examiner in performance of examinations of decedents to determine the cause and manner of death through varied sources of information.
  • Taking or supervising the collection of blood and other tissue samples needed to determine cause of death.
  • Provides documentation to report findings supported by the medicolegal death investigation in the form of a written report.
  • Collects evidence and photographs injuries for use in court cases.
  • Documents and completes reports according to department procedure for use in court cases.
  • Heavily involved in case review and follow up investigations.
  • Prepares reports and referral information for outside specialists and services as necessary.
  • Works collaboratively with other medical professionals, management and staff team members.
  • May communicate with Law Enforcement, Medical Professionals in the community, Attorneys, and Families of decedents.
  • May oversee students, interns, and other forensic staff.
  • Uses a variety of standard office and specialized medical equipment, such as radiologic equipment and processor, cameras, surgical tools, and microscopes.
  • Adheres to infection control methods and procedures and follows established safety practices.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a forensic medical laboratory setting and typical office setting, use standard office equipment, and specialized forensic medical equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle in order to crime scenes and disasters and to attend meetings. Ability to wear a respirator. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
