THE POSITION

The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
  • Installs, repairs, maintains, programs, and services Public Safety communications equipment in a competent and skilled manner including two-way radios, microwave systems, and related electrical and electronic devices.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections and tests of two-way radio equipment to assure continued proper operation. Skillfully utilizes high accuracy testing equipment to measure frequency and deviation of portable, mobile and base station equipment.
  • Accurately diagnoses and pinpoints operational problems with such equipment and performs corrective repairs and maintenance to resolve defects and problems with the equipment.
  • Assures the proper and efficient operation of two-way radios and verifies it meets Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements.
  • Prepares and keeps accurate logs and records regarding repairs and modifications performed of Public Safety communications equipment sufficient to satisfy legal requirements and spots trends in equipment problems.
  • Keeps abreast of Public Safety communication trends and new equipment.
  • Provides timely service to all City departments.
  • May be required to travel to the location of the communications equipment to perform repairs in a skilled and competent manner.
  • Maintains a thorough and accurate inventory of all two-way radio related equipment.
  • Maintains effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees in the assessment of needed Public Safety communications maintenance, repair, or modification.
  • Supervises and assists contractors in the installation and repair of Public Safety communications equipment assuring compliance with specifications.
  • Performs other related duties.

Minimum Requirements : Graduation from high school or equivalent and four (4) years of training or experience in the repair, installation, maintenance and inspection of communications equipment and related electronic communications equipment.
Licenses & Certificates :
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Certificate or APCO (National Association of Public Safety Communications Officers) Competency Certificate or NABER (National Association of Business and Educational Radio) Certified Technician Certificate or NARTE (National Association of Radio Telecommunication Engineer) Certificate is desirable.
  • A Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Amateur Radio License, General Class or higher, is also desirable.


EXAMINATION PROCEDURES

Applicants must receive a passing score on all components of the examination process in order to be placed on the eligible list.

COMPONENT
  • WRITTEN TEST (weighted at 33%): To determine knowledge and aptitude. ( Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 21, 2026).
  • PERFORMANCE TEST (weighted at 34% each) : To measure to maintain communications equipment. ( Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 5, 2026).
  • ORAL INTERVIEW (weighted at 33%) : To evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications. ( Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 5, 2026 ).
