Position Duties

The Parks Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill multiple full-time Maintenance Assistant and Maintenance Worker I vacancies in the Parks Maintenance Division.

Salary range(s) for this classification is/are:
  • Maintenance Assistant: $59,280.00 - $75,649.60
  • Maintenance Worker I: $74,443.20 - $90,563.20

The program areas include:

Arcadia Ballpark
Arcadia Ballpark is the City’s 14.5-acre softball complex that includes four natural grass fields, hot concessions grill, restrooms, shaded stadium seating and a sports-themed playground. Arcadia Ballpark’s programs include sports leagues, special events, recreational camps & classes, and a field reservation program. This position will be responsible for general facility and ballfield maintenance.

Park Maintenance
The City of San Jose has 10 regional parks and 202 neighborhood parks that are managed and maintained by the Park Districts. This position will be responsible for general park maintenance of an assigned route of approximately 6 parks.

PRNS Maintenance Assistants perform a variety of entry-level maintenance tasks and are responsible for building, grounds, and park maintenance. Their responsibilities include:
  • Knowledge of the use and care of common hand tools used in maintenance.
  • Knowledge of landscape maintenance, pest control application, and irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safe work practices and precautions.
  • Awareness of the importance of safety in the workplace including the willingness and skills to communicate risks and hazards.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to relay information to the public.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to make simple measurements.
  • Ability to perform manual labor.

Ability to lift heavy weights (up to 50 pounds, or heavier weight). Employees in these positions may be required to work alternate shifts, including weekends, evenings, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

Duties of the Maintenance Worker I position include, but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining park grounds which may include, but is not limited to: irrigation, cultivation, pruning, planting, and transplanting a variety of turf, shrubs, trees, and plants.
  • Operating mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields and operating triplex gang/rotary mowers, power edgers, tractors, rototillers, sprayers, dump and other trucks, power chain saws and other light power equipment and hand tools used in grounds and maintenance work.
  • Applying fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers.
  • Maintaining and making minor repairs to playgrounds, picnic areas, athletic fields and sport courts, park trails, and firebreaks as well as make minor repairs and adjustments to irrigation systems, mowers, and miscellaneous equipment.
  • Performing clean-up and litter pick-up functions, cleaning pools and fountains, scheduling automatic irrigation controllers, maintaining work-related records, and preparing corresponding reports.
  • Explaining programs and policies to the public, providing lead guidance to less experienced workers, assisting in firefighting and rescue duties in wilderness park areas, and may be responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work areas.
  • Must be willing and able to lead various unpaid labor and volunteer participants.
  • Ability to lift heavy weights (up to 50 pounds, or heavier weight). Employees in these positions may be required to work alternate shifts, including weekends, evenings, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

Minimum Qualifications

Maintenance Assistant
Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).

Maintenance Worker I
Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency certificate) AND one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks, athletic fields, or public facilities.

Required Licensing for both Maintenance Assistant and Maintenance Worker I:
Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California

  • Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.
  • Customer Service - Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using professional demeanor.
  • Flexibility -Makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes in responsibilities, work processes, timeframes, performance expectations, organizational culture, or work environment.
  • Reliability - Completes quality work assignments in a timely and efficient manner; fulfills responsibilities and maintains confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Multi-Tasking- Can handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously; has handled a wide variety of assignments in past and/or current position(s).
