Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED or higher and completion of an industry-specific training, vocational, or certification program through a vocational school, trade school, technical school, or vocational instruction program.
Licenses and Certificates : Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state by time of appointment.
Note - Upon successful completion of a City of El Paso Fleet Maintenance trainee on-the-job training program, the trainee will be qualified for a regular Fleet Maintenance Technician position. Fleet Maintenance Technician positions may require the following licenses/certifications:
- Some positions may require a Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or equivalent from another state.
- Some positions may require Environmental Protection Agency certification for refrigerant recycling and recovery within six (6) months of appointment.
- Some positions may be required to obtain and maintain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
- Some positions may be required to obtain and maintain a Texas State Vehicle Inspector License Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
Special Requirements:
Applicants for positions requiring a CDL or of a safety-sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing and may be required to pass a physical examination by federal regulations.
Some positions must pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearance for working at an airport.
General Purpose
Under immediate supervision, attend and complete classroom and on-the-job training in
a variety of automotive and heavy equipment preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and other shop-related services.
Typical Duties
- Attend and successfully complete classroom sessions and field training to gain knowledge, and skills necessary to perform the duties of a Fleet Maintenance Technician.
- Learn to repair, recondition and maintain a variety of trucks, automobiles, buses and other City vehicles and equipment with gasoline, diesel or alternative fueled internal combustion engines. Perform regularly scheduled, emergency repair and/or preventative maintenance work under the guidance of Fleet Maintenance staff.
- Learn to assess, diagnose, analyze, and undertake overhaul repair, maintenance and upkeep tasks required based on work orders. Identify parts, supplies and materials needed.
- Learn to remove, inspect, install, and replace a variety of parts and components.
- Attend field training to learn how to test and validate repairs and maintenance work.
- Learn how to determine compliance with established repair, maintenance and upkeep standards, operations and expectations. Update and maintain files, records, logs and reports. Maintain cleanliness of work area and tools.
