Police Lieutenant
Job Description
Under limited supervision, the Police Lieutenant is responsible for the overall management, administration, and operational oversight of the Hampton University Police Department during assigned evening and midnight shift operations, generally covering the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The position provides command-level leadership, supervision, and operational direction to ensure the effective delivery of law enforcement, public safety, and security services.
The Police Lieutenant reports to the Captain or Deputy Chief of Police depending upon the assignment. The position requires sound judgement, leadership, accountability, flexibility, and availability to meet the evolving operational requirements of a 24-hour law enforcement organization.
Examples of Duties
- Direct, supervise, and evaluate personnel assigned to evening and midnight shift
- Manage daily law enforcement operations, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures
- Respond to major incidents; review reports, case files, arrest documentation, and other departmental records
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and deployment of personnel and resources
- Investigate complaints, administrative matters, and incidences involving departmental personnel
- Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of departmental polices, procedures, and operational plans
Typical Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Law Enforcement, or related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive responsible law enforcement experience and a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience at the rank of Sergeant or higher preferred.
- Experience in patrol operations, criminal investigations, emergency management, and incident command.
Supplemental Information
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must successfully pass required background investigation and employment screening processes.
